I agree. American History-French Revolution :P
The French government does this all the time with their l'Academie française and all. Before this, there were other words to be used for e-mail. It doesn't matter too much; the ordinary French person rarely cares about diluting the purity of the French language with English words and such. This only applies to official government stuff. Language is one area where certain nationalistically minded French people tend to become slightly fascistic.
This quirk is perfectly pardonable (the German and Spanish languages have similar purity institutions, by the way) because the French had a lot of guts to stand up to President Bush's selfish act of imperialism in the United Nations Security Council, and they knew ahead of time Bush would penalize them for it. We can only hope France will defend its principles more vigorously when President Bush makes his next assault against international law.
Oh God. Unregd just tried to turn this into Bush-bash 3432.
Someone close this before the insanity starts.
Unregd. Why don't you register?
Because then I wouldn't be Unreg[istere]d.Quote:

And I did not intend my previous post as "Bush-bash 3432." I am merely stating the shortcoming of the current administration in regards to diplomacy and international law. I believe you were implying that their act of defiance in the Security Council was as stupid as this. I would have to disagree with every fiber of my body.
The French have contributed throughout history. France has produced innumerable writers, artists, and philosophers. More recently, France has worked to build an international system of cooperation that the Bush administration has unilaterally backed the United States out of.
i don;t c the big deal.....it the same as calling french fries "freedom fries"....
The French has been our ally for a long time, but you have to admit, they're pretty dumb...
Yup, the French have been AWESOME throughout history.
30 Year's War.
Franco-Prussian War
French Revolution (they lost against themselves)
World War I
World War II
to list a few
You could say that there was Napoleon, but he was from Corsica, and they still managed to lose. I think we can also blame those retarded beret things on the French.
I wasn't referring to the Security Counsel. I was referring to what I just said - they suck at fighting.
they even suck at fighting themselves. They should all chuck escargot at the opponents. That'd scare 'em off :P
I'm all for a reincarnation of Robespierre. It would do their nation good.
Oh come on... The US has done plenty of things that are on the order of "just plain stupid"... petty little laws like this. No one really cares about them.
yup. Every country has. Especially the French, though :P
what does everybody got against the french????? i don;t c anything wrong with them.
Je ne sais pas. Tout le monde est fou.
edit: stupid typo
Gee, he said pass. Toots let Mongo eat you. :P
I can understand the french. They want to protect their language. But they should have done it a long time ago. now the word email is too widly used.
There are alot of words comming from the english language and personaly I think their should be a translation for most of the words.
I speak dutch, and I'm proud of it. That's why I want to keep the language "pure". I'm not saying that I don't use the word email, in fact, I (and I asume everyone who speaks dutch) will prefer the word email above "elektronische post". But if there was a better alternitive (look at the length of words between english and dutch) and it was introduced at the same time as the word email, I think I would use the dutch word.
I think that's the same with the french, they want to keep the language pure. But it is too late for the word email, they should have done it a while ago.
Maintenant I ga écrire a courriel........... Oh wait, that's not right
anyway my 2€ cent
edit:
I don't mean to disrespect anyone, but I have to say this:
the americans are very patriotic about the flag and their country, you can't say a bad word about either of them without getting flamed but when the french try to protect their language, they are called stupid and dumb. ;)
I don't know the facts but I think the comparison there isn't right.
people not liking when you are saying bad things about flag and country
vs
country banning something from another country.
I think the two are pretty different maes. American's don't typically ban outside thought, much as you might think. When the french decide to ban a word's use it's not quite protecting themselves against an aggressive foreigner. It's more like being anti- outside world.
edit:
besides, isn't it the English who they have a problem with in this case? let's leave americans alone for a day shall we?
As I see it, they aren't doing it to ban something from the states/english, they are doing it to protect their language. they are being patriotic about their language, they want to preserve it.
>>let's leave americans alone for a day shall
Only said it because the persons who called the french stupid and dumb are from the states (if they were from an other country, I wouldn't have said)
And I think anyone who's speaking a minority language in the world would agree with me (about the french choosing a french word for email).
I agree their being a bit ridiculous... Some legislators probably had just a bit too much time on their hands. Happens everywhere... thats the problem when elected officials become a little too efficient for their own good. ;)
I agree with Maes...
And using a Frech word in Frances official websites, papers, etc... is totally right, French people can use the word they like, but officials should use a french word...
You shouldn't be calling them dumb for that!
Im from australia and I only speak english, but I agree with ammar and the rest of them. If I had a language that sounded as good as french, I'd want to preserve it too.
And I dont see how the flag comparrison was so irrelivant. I thought of protecting their language as a sense of national pride, not the fact they don't like english words :P
If you guys read the article, it's only changing in government things. It's no different from the US's stupid freedom fries thing. In fact, I'd say it's better; at least they're not intentionally singling out another country.
no different eh? "Freedom fries" was a single restaraunt. Not a government thing.
it was blown WAAYYYY out of proportion.
It was the official cafeteria of the House, IIRC.
all govt. docs vs a restaraunt manager's gimmic decision. hmmmmm
interesting
before anyone goes and pulls out their news stories about "freedom fries" I should point out that we're not talking about a govt legislated mandate with freedom fries. the two don't relate at all. You could point out far worse decisions from a single business owner in any given country.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/...prj.irq.fries/
It wasn't a government mandate, but it was spearheaded by 2 Congressmen. I'm just saying everyone's stupid.
I don't dispute the general stupidity of the human race. In fact that speaks greatly toward my following point.
I see a tendency on this board to disregard the criticism of most other countries when the US can not escape it over something so insignificant. And I do recognize the global scope of this board which is why I usually don't get into these things anymore. But I do need to point it out once in a while when it is so blatant.
Yes, everyone's stupid. Freedom Fries are stupid. But the comparison wasn't valid. A nation banned an outside word. An English word. Simply because it was an english word. The US did no such thing.
Not because it was english. Because it wasn't French. They want to preserve their language, they're welcome to, in my eyes.
fair enough. I just get defensive when people lump my entire country in with a business owner who is somewhere inside my country. It's really easy to make a country look stupid simply by picking up one of their own newspapers and pointing out the stupidity of it citizens.
you still da man GC.
No, no, no - YOU da man, fyb.
One thing about the french fries, freedom fries:
they are BOTH wrong, they should be called belgium fries dammit :D we're the french fries country :D
I've got no problem with France preserving their heritage, but you damn Belgish people can go back to Belgiumville, or wherever the hell you're from.
I thought they did waffles.
And chocolate.
We got all sorts of stuff waffles, beer, belgium fries, choclate, manneke pis
[brag]small country great people :D[/brag]
>> but you damn Belgish people can go back to Belgiumville, or wherever the hell you're from
STFU GC :p
hell is the right word, it so damn hot here, my roomtemp. doesn't drop under 30°C (yeah that's right, we use Celsius :p )
30C?! What do you mean that was hot? Last week I would've killed for a nice cool temperature like that. :)
but you don't live in rainy belgium ;) I'm not used to those tempratures, I melt :D
I wonder if they need to be in French.
Is this legal I wonder - sounds like a state subsidy...
Sounds nice, but I wonder if it'd really help. What if the games said bad things about France? Would they still be published. I didn't know Ubi Soft and Infogrames were Freedomese, though.
I hate the entire french culture. I have visited Frace once before and visited Pays de la Loire for a week with the occasional visit into Paris and it just blew.
Well, that's nice.
yup.
More news from France:
Top part of Eiffel Tower on fire, according to wire services. CNN working to confirm. Details to come.
Yep, BBC News is saying the same thing.
Sounds like it's been put out. July 22nd NEVER FORGET!
Terrorism or accident or weather?
Sounds like the fire started as an accident in an electrical closet or something.
It would be a shame to loose that ugly piece of metal...
Yeah... It sounds like somone forgot to insulate some electrical wires or something.
I really wish the webmaster would give mods the ability to alter custom titles.Quote:

Want me to change it? What is wrong about saying that the Eiffle Tower is ugly? You do know it wasn't supposed to be a perminate place anyhow? It's a sore eye if you are there for more than a week trust me.
I promise I'd make it something interesting.
Pm it to me and I will change it. I don't really care if its offencive to me.
This promises to be quite entertaining.
No, I don't feel the need to PM you. I've seen your PM exchanges, and they're not pretty.
Let me talk to the webmaster. I've got a couple ideas, but they're too long.
can others request titles for you?
how about "Doesn't have a life"
or "Sometimes wishes he was FYB"
or even "Takes it in the...."
Or how about
"EVERYONE HATES ME"
or maybe
"..........ING MORON"
I vote for number 3 :D
I wanted "One step away from being banned", but it didn't fit.
I put down one of your lovely ones. Will you change yours to
"I like to make stupid remarks to try and insult people and act cool while doing it!"
If you would see if that would fit it would be nice.
;)Code:int a = strlen("I like to make stupid remarks to try and insult people and act cool while doing it!");
int b = strlen("One step away from being banned");
if(a < b)
printf("It'll work... maybe.");
else
printf("Not gonna happen.");
Nope, too long.Quote:

Besides, I've done the "request Cheez's title" game before. It worked pretty well, especially once you understand that most of the people at this site like me, or at the very least, don't actively hate me, like they do you. That's why they voted me as mod and you're really close to getting your ass booted out of here.
People activly hate me? hate is a rather strong word to begin with. But if someone "hates" me then they should speak up now. I don't hate you. i think you can be annoying at times with some of your insults and comments. But I don't hate anyone here on the board and noone has any legit reason to hating me. So please speak up if you really hate me and tell me why. I think if you hate someone on a message board then you shouldn't be on it because it is supposed to be a place to have fun. And if you get mad over something little such as a comment written down you more than likely have deeper issues from your anger comes.
Fine, "strong dislike" is a better term for it. My reasons ban (lol freudian slip) be summed up pretty easily. I'll type slowly, so you can understand. You are not nearly as smart as you think you are. When you realize that, your time here will be better spent. As it is, you should really go outside and do something, because by spending your time here, you're really just getting in my hair, and I don't really like that.
I know I'm not as smart as half of you. I have my beliefs however. I stick by them because I believe in them. I may be younger, I may not be as good with computers with all you, I might not experience the things you do. But I know what I know and if I know something about the topic I will speak. I'm not sheltered from the world.
I'm guessing it's almost time for Zakk to show up with a whole new account. Maybe a nice fresh start.
where's "no-one" been lately?Quote:
noone has any legit reason to hating me
But the problem is, you frequently speak on things you don't know a damn thing about, and usually refuse to back down. The Who is a punk band? Sure, why not! Clinton started the first Gulf War? Hey, sounds good to me!
Learn how to answer questions so you don't sound like a flaming jackass.
Realize that there is actually a pecking order here, to some extent. You, as a newbie with over 300 posts in the short time you've been here, are really quite low on that order. Some people can bend the rules (I'm referring specifically to your PM exchange with adrian, which was hilarious) because, well, people think much more highly of them than they do of you.
My chief problem with you is your complete and total inability to realize you're wrong unless it's beaten into you with a large hammer.
And, because I like saying it, mess up one more time and you're out of here.
edit:
> where's "no-one" been lately?
I talked to him a few weeks ago in PM about doing interviews, but I never got around to it because I'm lazy. I haven't seen him since then.
Didn't I admit I was wrong about the Clinton thing? I said I thought he bombed Iraq. Someone said no and I said Oh ok I was wrong. As far as the bending of the rules. Its not bending its just ignoring them.
>>Learn how to answer questions so you don't sound like a flaming jackass.
A bit hypocritical. using insults in a post makes a person sound immature.
If you want to ban me for speaking my part then I surely can't stop you.
>>The Who is a punk band?
I think I was refering towards the word "the" in the name on that one.
Ok so my problem is I am a little hard to get through to. Your problem is you don't listen at all. You ignore the rules that you are supposed to strictly follow. You are insulting in many of your posts. And you come off as a cocky person who thinks he is awsome because he moderates a forum over the internet.
Now go ahead and tell me what you think about me because I know you will.
**edit note** A typo. Time to call the typo police..
Also isn't there something like an ignore. So if you don't like reading my posts why don't you put me on ignore and not have to bother with me since I'm such a burden?
> A bit hypocritical. using insults in a post makes a person sound immature.
I disagree. It's not as if I'm responding to you with "lol ur stoppid". I'm trying to actually giove you hints on how to stay around here longer.
> I think I was refering towards the word "the" in the name on that one.
Semantics, but you were referring to punk bands with "the" in their name.
> Your problem is you don't listen at all.
Llalalalala!
Seriously, I listen. I listen plenty. If I don't agree with you, I'm going to let you know. Unlike some people, I'll actually let you know why, besides just calling you "pinko" or "commie".
> You ignore the rules that you are supposed to strictly follow.
The only one I ignore is the swearing one. I don't agree with it. Then again, I don't really enforce it, either. Other than that, tell me the rules I break.
> You are insulting in many of your posts.
Only when I feel the person deserves it. I don't flame many people, for as often as I post here. You just happen to be Idiot King recently, so you get the most of it.
> And you come off as a cocky person who thinks he is awsome because he moderates a forum over the internet.
You're partially right. Yeah, I'm cocky. So? It's not because I'm a mod, and I certainly don't think I'm awesome because of it. It's just me. Sorry.
> Now go ahead and tell me what you think about me because I know you will.
Would have been pretty pointless if I hadn't, wouldn't it?
> Also isn't there something like an ignore. So if you don't like reading my posts why don't you put me on ignore and not have to bother with me since I'm such a burden?
I can't do that. It's difficult to moderate a forum when you don't read the posts.
Well then. So you're just saying you read the stuff you just don't let it sink in? I'm really tired of arguing with a brick wall. Your only argument is you're a moderator and you have a problem with me. I don't call people pinko's or commie. the only term I remember using is Liberal. I called someone stupid once and thats about it but, I have 2 things to say before i end this.
1. Ban me, ignore me, do whatever you want I'm just tired of listening to you talking about what a horrid person I am.
2. If anyone really does have a problem with me send me a PM. I will be glad to try and change.
> So you're just saying you read the stuff you just don't let it sink in?
Yes, that's exactly what I meant.
> I don't call people pinko's or commie
I didn't mean you.
> Your only argument is you're a moderator and you have a problem with me.
No. I may be a mod, but there are plenty of other people who have a problem with you. If they have a problem, I have one; my personal taste doesn't matter much.
> If anyone really does have a problem with me send me a PM. I will be glad to try and change.
You've received quite a few PMs already. I can post them, if you'd like. They're up in the moderator board. You sure come off like you're trying to change.
The only real problem I have with you is when you say stupid things like "I hate the entire french culture. I have visited Frace once before and visited Pays de la Loire for a week with the occasional visit into Paris and it just blew."
I honestly don't know what country you are from, I think I remember hearing something about America. But seriously, if a french came to america for only a week and said out loud "I just hate the entire American culture! It just blows!" you would consider him an uneducated arrogant snob.
I'm part french. Born in Canada. Visited France personally and I find their culture suck.
Oh and I haven't recieved any PM's GC.
I don't know what Zakk has been posting so maybe I shouldn't say anything but you guys really don't like him do you? Its a pretty harsh bunch of words that have been going back and forth here. And GC I don't remember you having this kind of disdain for TrollKing. Now THAT was someone who annoyed the crap out of me.
Visited France personally....... for how long? A week? How much experience of the French culture do you exactly have?Quote:
I'm part french. Born in Canada. Visited France personally and I find their culture suck.
T_K was (is) funny. Zakk is just plain ignorant and/or stupid.
Although he's not the worst on this board, I'll give him that.
>>Oh and I haven't recieved any PM's GC.<<
And I doubt that you will. That would imply that people actually care about you and think that you could possibly change.
This last post is a perfect example. I explain to you why it was bad that you did something, and instead of explaining yourself or showing any understanding of my post you just stick your fingers in your ears, get on top of your high horse and shout at the top of your lungs the exact same statement.
