Ok heres a poll i don't think has been done recently!
When you work on or build pc's do you use perfessional habits?
Such as wearing anti-static wrist bands (i do), placing everything back in anti-static bags, having a clean work area with good lighting, etc?
I can't vote. I'm inbetween.
I have a desk, which I place everything on, or either on the floor right beside it. By this desk I have a 3-headed spot-light lamp besides my 3-headed overhead light fixture.
I have plenty of anti-static bags and tend to keep them after receiving something in the mail. I have plenty of boxes to neatly organize spare parts. I have a small little plastic bag full of enough hardware(screws and bolts) for 2 computers with the works probably. I have an assortment of screwdrivers. I have motherboards, spare hard drives, 3 power supplies and enough for trouble shooting(6 possible video display solutions and 16 speakers + 3 amps). I have enough to figure out and trouble shoot a wide vareity of things.
However, my work area is a mess. Sometimes I slam things around, I don't wear an anti-static wrist band currently due to doing all of my work on hard-wood flooring.
...and I'm one to use a computer for weeks without actually hooking up the last 25% of some of the internal components. (with the case being off of course)
Nah, I just unplug everything and place it on the floor or my bed.
You should see the computer workshop my buddy owns that I take my comp to when it needs something major. IT's a friggin mess.
Half the time I have to take the thing back b/c they put in a part from someone else's computer that was in for fixing - so I have to go back and ask, "Why do I have 2 sound cards.?" - And did u see my Windows 2K Prof. disk I'm sure I'll need that back. Dude:" Yeah, go ahead and check that box, if it's not in there just take this WinXP CD" that belongs to someone else who brought their PC in to be fixed.
I definitely don't use an anti-static wrist band but do try to place parts in anti-static bags if they're available, if not then I don't worry about it. My work area is far from clean overall but I try to keep the area clean around my PC I'm working on.

I dont tend to do a lot of stuff by myself, never really need to, but I would love to learn. I installed a second hard drive and Linux yesterday thanks to some help at the tech board. People told me what I should watch out for etc.. things I wouldnt know, since I have never done it before.
I do have a lot of room and good lighting, so I guess I am somewhere in the middle. :D
Can't you just plug the case in and hang onto it? All static will be grounded via the third prong on the cord.
I guess you could, i just use a wrist band.
I just put my wrists or knee or something on the case while I'm working, does the same thing as a band....or grounding yourself via the third prong (which i think is a REALLY bad idea :)).
I do use anti static bags when it's the packing that it came in (like for swapping in/out hdds). But things like ram etc I just lay on something plastic(like the packing material), it doesnt conduct electricity.
Most of the work I've done is in a poorly lit room (where this comp is) on a carpeted floor.
OH well, haven't had a single problem yet, just stay grounded.

i'm an animal. i work on the floor, desk, TV, kitchen table etc. the only static protection i use is to touch the case with one hand before touching the components with the other.
i've been pretty luck, i haven't shocked anything yet.

I use a wrist strap when I can find it - you see the catch is that the level of static electricity strong enough to damage a static sensitive component is less than what we can detect. You may not see an electrical discharge or even feel it and yet you may have fried your memory.
Also - damage can be in degrees. It is quite possible to damage memory in such a fashion that the memory does not stop working, but performance is degraded.
Ya i know what you mean with knowing where the band is, i am always losing that thing. I always move things into static bags and use the band, even in a rush.
I learned my lesson after attempting to change video cards with the pc running, long time ago though when i didn't know that wouldn't work haha.

Actually, I'm in between - I try to do it in well lit rooms as much as possible, and put the parts in bags if they're available. If they're not, I try to put them somewhere where I won't lose them or step on them.

i use wristbands and antistatic bags etc. but that is because i am in a class where we have learned to build pcs. the teacher takes off 50 out of our 100 points if he catches us without a wristband on!

And I don't do many things the "pro" way... but if you're careful enough, you don't always need to IMO.
Hmm,i've built dozens of PC's.
My expirience tells me that hardware isn't all that weak.
Anti-Static glove's is overkill if you tell me, of course it can't do
any harm can it?
Unplugging is of course A MUST.
Putting hardware temp. in a anti-static bag is overkill as well if
you ask me, my bed suffices just fine.
Having patience in adding new hardware is A MUST, you really
can't just yank a new card in your pc, dust-free hardware is also
appriciated.

Isn't it common in the linux world to have a large uptime?
I've heard of linux guys unwilling to lose their uptime; they changed sound cards while the computer was running..

i look at it like this, 100 years ago when memory chips were dip and 4.77mhz was cool, a guy told me,
"dont touch the ..........ing pins" a little later when i was installing a modem a gal told my "dont touch the ..........ing pins"
so for the last 20 years i just keep my fingers off of the ..........ing pins and have had good luck.

At my work we have anti-static pads on the floor and on the lab-tables. We also wear wrist bands and anti-static bags to transport hardware. But still sometimes we have damaged hardware, probably because someone tries to work on the boards without the wrist bands and then the chip gets damaged.
