[rant]Let's just make it clear that I never enjoyed school in any way, shape, or form. That said, I feel that it has gotten much worse recently. I get to school and spend 7 hours sitting around doing absolutely nothing, no learning what so ever going on.[/rant] to be continued...

I must say, I disliked school until I got to about 16, then it became interesting because they starting telling me stuff I didn't already know. University was a blast!

My advice to you is: Enjoy it as much as you can, you will miss it
well deathstryke I have been feeling much the same way. Do (any of you) feel like you can do so much more on your own? I personally feel very constricted with school. It's not so much that I'm incredibly gifted, it's just that school has to meet certain standards that somewhat accomodate everyone and I just think the standard goes too slow/doesn't offer a whole lot of useful material.
I think, that school is maybe the best part in your life.
U can learn, u are in school with friends.
I often enjoy school, but it very hard for me cause my time schedule looks like this:
Monday: 6 hours in school
Tuesday: 8 hours in school
Wednesday: 11 hours in school
Thursday: 6 hours in school
Friday: 7 hours in school
But I like school, cause u can learn and the things, u can learn there aren't wrong.
It's like coding:
U go to school and learn // u write ur prog
U go working // u have closed the coding stuff and now u have to run ur prog

I don't really have a problem with school/class....but the political BS which goes on at the administration level really drives me nuts! Being in a small school (and being active in all aspects of extra curricular activies ie: sports, drama, technology, school boards) exposes me to this crap constantly. My principal is a caniving (sp?), egotistical, manipulative rat-bastard who's only looking for his personal gain (the problem is he's in a position of power where he can make it happen). He's screwed me over on many occasions, so I'm not going to help him anymore until he actually shows some initiative on a project.
I cannot wait until college, shorter hours, more enjoyable classes, and the administration has a MUCH smaller impact on your everyday life....plus the parties are better and the chiks are hotter :).
My classes this year are just revolting in general, but you don't see me complaining.
Get over it. Sometimes you just can't do what you want.
Well that seems pretty realistic, if not a little on the harsh side, but realistic nonetheless. I guess that's what we all have to learn: putting up with bs. It's not like when we get out of school it's all going to disappear, in fact as far as I've heard the opposite is true!Quote:

I agree with shadow12345, it seems like school just goes too slow. i only have to put up with high school for 5 more months, then i get to go to college, woohoo!:) Actually, I don't mind high school that much right now, but I would like it better if i only had 3, (i'd be okay with 5) classes out of the 6 right now that I have. I've heard that jobs aren't that fun either, but that's life. i just can't wait till college right now.
bah, just enjoy the moment. If you keep looking towards the future with hope, you will, no doubt, be greatly dissapointed many, many times before you even see a shred of the happiness you thought was in store for you.

You go to school pratically almost 20 years of your life. Learn to enjoy it, it will have some of your better moments. You have nothing to worry about now, food, shelter etc...
After school you will have to deal with all of this yourself.
I am enjoying school so much at University, much more than HS, maybe you will feel the same way.
I think I will enjoy college better than high school. I love the social scene right now in HS, but the everyday dealings with the 6 hour day, and the feeling of I'm not learning anything in, oh id say one of my classes, the other classes i'm fine with and enjoy, is not :).Quote:

I'm positive that half the stuff I learn in school will be of absolutely no use to me in my future, and learning it is just a huge waste of time which could be better spent. It's even more rediculous when teachers assign things which are so redundant for the particular field, which does not at all make me feel inclined to complete them.

I agree, there are some classes that really have no value with my intended major. I am looking to go into engineering, so all i see that is important is calc, physics, comp sci and english(engineers that can write get paid more...).Quote:

I remember my parents telling me that school would be the happiest time in my life and to enjoy it.
I did not believe them! I could not leave school and had no control over what I got to do.
Now the boss / girlfriend / 30 year housing loan compeat to make most of my choices (not in that order).
Least at school my Mum made my lunch.

On school:
You guys want to start looking at the bright side of school. School is cool. You get all sorts of variety in your work, looked after by your parents, the opportunity to chat up all your female pals.....
Work on the other hand, don't think for a minute that it's not FULL of tedious tasks. Sitting in meetings that are a complete waste of time, writing reports that nobody is ever going to read, having to chase after people cos they are too bone idle to respond to you........beleive me school was loads easier.

Um.... I was in "school" (unless that's some weird euphemism or something)... Graduated in '99... Am I missing something?
I believe that you can never be sure what you're going to be in the future, so i would learn as much as i can in as great variety as possible. Even if you insist, learning more things can never hurt, jsut adds to your common sense.Quote:

The only good thing about school for me is the three hours a day that I spend hanging around here. I decided to teach myself how to program c++ as something to do in computer repair and for the 90% of the time that the cisco curriculum doesn't want to work. So far it (learning programming) isn't working too well, as I have to do that at home and I tend to forget my questions before I get to school to post them. That and I run low on ideas for dumb little programs to test out features of the language. I tend to get grand schemes that I don't have the knowledge to implement.
yes schools sucks alot. for example i took two computer classes this year and i was pretty excited about them. but it turns out they both suck. the first is computer maintenace which is the better. mostly its out of book learning and occasionally we get to build a computer (yippee). then networking has been all cisco cirruculm, no labs or hands on at all. i wish they had a class to teach some programming because i suffer from some of the same problems as deathstryke. the rest of my classes can be okay except when i get long tedious boring assignments. sometimes i actually enjoy going to my part-time job more than school. not to metion most of the chicks in our town are dumb people of compromised morals anyway, so that kind of takes that fun out of school as well.

My other big issue is that I managed to fail English last year, so I have to take 2 really stupid English classes this year. English is my least favorite subject with applied biochem (naptime) being a close second. I only took applied biochem because the stupid counselors gangtackled me out of physics (My chem grade was a D because I spent the entire year without a calculator, and I simply can't be accurate to 3 decimal places quickly. I can get close but not quite.)

Want a calculator? Get a job. You don't even have to work long - even at minimum wage you could get a scientific calculator for about 3 hours of work.
I now have a TI-83 because there is no way in hell to pass trig without one. And that fact managed to get the money out of my mother so it worked.

Anyway, if you ain't got a calculator, do it the proper way.....use a slide-rule :D

i know what a slide rule is but not how to use it. i use my ti-83 plus in class but at home i use my abacus (i spelled it right!!)

I hated high school as well.
Hated having to memorize this, and having to memorize this, and then by the time the midterm and final came around, I forgot it all anyways.
But now, after being out of school for a while, I miss being around people my own age. I spent some time working, and I'm now taking corporate training classes (everyone's older than me).
Everything much more boring for me now, and I don't have money go to college, and I've got to go join the Navy or Air Force or something to get scholarship money so I can go back etc.
Take my advice, enjoy it, and don't worry about grades, worry about learning.
Sshool is ok for me. I'm living through it at least. My programming classes really help. That's what makes me want to come to school.I know that I can do a lot more on my own. I try to take as many indepndent studies as I can. That way I can really focus and learn. I also can't wait until college next fall, it is going to be awsome.Quote:

I don't worry about my grades, my mother worries about them to the point that you would swear that they were hers. I just stick to learning math too fast for school and watching my grade plummet because of it.
what really hacks me off about school is the homework. ive found that the more homework a teacher gives the less i like their class. low homework classes have typically been my favorite as long as the subject material was sligthly interesting.

yes govtcheese my logic is simple. maybe one of these days the teachers will catch onto this fact and stop giving out craploads of boring unneeded tedious homework. i doubt it though.
I've always hated classes where they give out busy-work assignments ("Do problems 1-57 - they're all the same"), but I usually enjoy big projects where I can do research and stuff... That's pretty cool.
i would agree with you there. i also hate it when a teacher is gone for something and they just give you a crap assignment like the one you described to take up the hour. i had that experience in math on monday.
Yeah, that's always nice, too. How come (in high school) none of the subs have any knowledge of the subject itself? I don't know how many times we had a music teacher in our AP Calc class...
at our schools they just have several regular subs. sometimes it seems like they just pulled someone in off of the street. we have one that lets us do whatever we want though, cause she is really timid.
Or a kindergarten teacher in chem. In eighth grade my history class had a permanent sub who could very easily get talked into telling stories about "back in the winter of ot-two" and the like.
Research only helps if I like the topic and since most of the classes I've had just say "research this topic" with out giving much free reign, research tends to suck.
especially when the subjects to choose from are limited. and when you need five certain required sources. like a magazine, newspaper, book, almanac and internet. that sucks. i can get most of my info from a good ol world book encylopedia.
My senior year in HS, we had a research project for AP History. We could research anything from the 20th century. It was great (of course, I really enjoy history, but...) - most people got A's because they were able to pick their own topics and do whatever thy wanted with it.
i was in gate(gifted and talented education) for students with high iq scores in middle school, and every year we got to do a report on whatever we wanted. i always did it on some conspiracy like atlantis and jfk assassination and that was pretty cool.
I did McCarthyism - it worked nicely because one of the chief opponents of McCarthy was from MI (although I didn't know that ahead of time), so my local library had a good set of info on it.
Jessie, most of us either didn't do it or did it the weekend before it was due. Mine were usually on various implements of destruction. Remember the year when everyone skipped the science fair? That was the closest to being ........ed I ever saw Mrs. F.
