Just wanting to see what every body uses/prefers.
I prefered the Pentiums up till pentium 2, then when amd released the athlon and it dominated the P3 in almost everything I jumped ship and switched to AMD and im glad b/c its saved me a lot of money, plus their customer service was better than intels when i had gotten a dead cpu.
No preference - have used both - have had troubles with both, but generally either seems to work.
Same as Adrian....I have 2 pcs....1 Pentium III....One AMD.....
Though when I build my next one....I will probably go for AMD due to the price difference
i will choose AMD because of the better performance which have the same processor speed between them. www.tomshardware.com which u can see the benchmark of teh 2 CPU and mostly will goi for AMD XP(right now).
I'm using AMD Thunderbird in my PC and P3 for my laptop.
AMD is wise choice.
I used to have Pentium Pro 166MHz, then it died in the butt, end of 2000. Then I bought and AMD K6-2 and it's pretty damn good.
Just as a comment though, when AMD released there Athlon, it was heaps better than an equivalent Pentium of the time, which happened to be Pentium 3. And even now AMD out performs equivalent pentium's. AMD Rocks cos' its cheaper too! :D
AMD all the way.
Intel just anounced that they are dropping the price of P4's by up to 50%. (particularly the mobile CPU's)

Well so that's interesting, any reason why?

unlike anything you can say about microsoft v. linux, intel and amd are just two cpu companies. one offers cheaper chips. (but it is also much more capable of overheating). intel v. amd is like peas v. carrots.
Lets se the facts.
AMD,s processor is up in smoke when the CPU cooler is removed.
Pentium 4 keeps a temperature of about 30-40 degrees.
Hmmm.. A processor that has better cooling should have better speed.
That,s not correct in the AMD vs Pentium 4 battle.
AMD´s 2.2 Ghz Processor is faster than a Pentium at the same speed.
Everyone says the movie from Tom's Hardware is fake, and its just to promote Pentium 4 and blablablahbla.
I mean Tom's Hardware that made the CPU without cooler video has given Pentium 4 in someways a bad reputaion
by talking alot about their speed against AMD.
AMD = overheating crashing and errors. Pentium 4 = bigger badder better
The last few posts have show that you guys know absolutely nothing on the subject...

This is usually followed by an explanation on the subject, you know something to support your statement, I am sure a few of us would like to hear your reasons for your assumption.
Not sure but ...What does removing the heat sink have to do with anything. ? Unless your on a laptop
You also forgot to mention that most other high end processors do too.Quote:

1) Assumption? What assumption did I make?Quote:

2) I don't have time
3) It's pretty obvious those 'facts' are dripping with his/her own opinion.
4) I really could care less if AMD/Intel gets bashed.

You shouldn't ASSUME that just because a of some words in a post....just because that's his or hers opinion's doesn't mean they know nothing about the subject, maybe you just have a different opinion. I don't really care either care, I can hardly put a computer together.
I read a review in some game magazine about an athlon at something like 1500 mhz and a p4 at like 2000 mhz and on 75% of applications the athlon kicked some ass. They used exactly the same hardware(video card, etc...) for each machine, once they tested the first they then yanked it all out and did the second. Athlon is also cheaper... what more can be said?
I'm sold on the Athlon.
The pentium 4 chips will throttle down if they are overheating, instead of frying, which is nice. Still, I prefer AMD.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure all chips do that.
And to top off the fact that it already runs slightly faster, you can overclock the hell out of the athlons. And by the way, I don't want to hear any of the "It burns your processor up faster. " In my opinion whoopdedoo. Chances are you're going to have a new one every couple of years anyway, its not really going to affect it unless you do it for years.
My Athlon started crashing after a few weeks... Always when it was hot temperature. After a while I couldn't take it anymore so I had to backup to my old P133, running since years even without any CPU cooler (only a heatsink and a case cooler near the CPU).
I can't really say if it was the CPU or the motherboard that was crap but I just have a better feeling with Intel now (got a new P3, this double-buying in a short time was really expensive ). Might have been bad luck or anything but I don't know... Too many people have similar experiences to not see a pattern here. The intel is rocksolid, whatever you say.
I guess that doesn't really matter to hardware-freaks and gamers though and the AMD is really faster and cheaper (esp. for gaming).
Actually i'm on my 2nd amd. I had an athlon xp1800 and my fan went out, about 5 minutes later the processor went out too. I've never had the oppurtunity to do this with a pentium but I assume that a pentium would last longer, as much as i hate to admit it.

I compare Intel with Microsoft. I take no questions concerning that statement.
AMD forever.
Yeah, a pentium can take more **** than an amd can.Quote:

there is no thing such as AMD 2.2 GHzQuote:

it is AMD 2200 which is about 1.8 GHZ
U should not use AMD without HeatSink
it heats-up really fast
Thats not the case for Pentium or its related products
Money wise AMD better,
Performance wise Pentium better.
So will an Intel chip...Quote:

Athlon XP out prefom pentium 4's. (there is more then speed you know) and this is proven through numerious test.
Without a heat sink both would normaly go up in smoke but intel's actually slow down so they don't heat up. This should be the trend for all chips after this both AMD and Intel.
hmmm , i ran a p2 266 for a LONG time..was ok. I now run an 1800XP AMD, again no problems. Why (relating to above posts) would any1 WANT to run their CPU without a fan? Kinda doesnt really warrant talking about. Does it?
My thoughts exactly... if you know it runs hot, get it some decent cooling.
Personally I love my AMD XP2000
With the proper heat sink my core temp never jumps above 52c (about 125f)
Now a quick comparison.
My dads box has a P4 w/ 512ddr pc2700 at 333mh. Thats the new chip
Now i'm running a XP2000+ with 512pc2100 at the usual 133mh.
Everything else is the same. With the exception of the motherboards and my debugger*.
Same graphics card(GF4)
Same ethernet
Same software on loads at startup*
Same size/speed HD
Same OS
Same 10button game pad.
Using my stop watch at his request, we times are machines and these where the results.
My booted at 15sec, his 23.
That is completely booted and ready to go.
Using trueSpace to render the same animations.
Mine 5h3m52s
His 6h42m03s
Not much of a deference there.
Most of that the graphics card did. Only the radiosicity (Lighting) what performed by the cpu.
Now the real test.
Microsoft's CPU stress test. Included with their SDK
My dads could handle:
2 threads
1 time critical, busy
1 high, busy
with about six seconds lag when pressing the startmenu button on the keyboard
Mine:
2 threads
both time critical, busy
with about eight seconds lag on the start button.
Try that on a 1.2gh(p3 i think) cpu and your froze.
His had more that 30sec. lag
In my opinion amd is the current way to go.
If anyone removes the cooling system on a high speed processor, I WILL constantly call them a dumb a$$.Quote:

Don't double-post.
During the following months by next year, when I have enough money, I will get an AMD ClawHammer 3GHz+.
For laptop, I'm getting a Pentium III-M with an ATI chip w/ miniman of 16-32MB VRAM (64-MB is good but expensive).
