Are you guys afraid of C# and .NET?

For some reason I get the feeling that alot of C and C++ programmers are afraid that C/C++ will lose alot of its fanbase to C# and other .NET technology. Do any of you guys feel this way?

Why the hell would that happen? C# is a toatally different language and has different uses. Besides, the .NET platform encouraegs you to use a variety of languages in one project. Maybe Java will lose some of its fanbase, but not C/C++.

Since .NET supports Managed C++. Which I've heard is very different from normal C++.

I'm not afraid. Fear leads to the dark side :p We already use it, our next big project is C#.

I read something about that VB is losing most programers at the moment. something like 15% the last year. Java have a constant amount of users for the moment. I think the reasoning was that the relearning from VB6 to VB.NET was not much less then from VB6 to C#. I don't know VB so I can't say if that is true or not. And most Java users was waiting to see what happens to the net framework.

I agree with tim545666 that Java will probably lose some parts in the market to .NET. But, I don't think that C and C++ will, since they apply to a range which is much wider than C# or Java. C and C++ haven't lost market to Java and since .NET and Java are of the same kind, I don't think .NET will be a threat for C and C++.

But perhaps Visual C++.NET will be a threat for C++, I heard it is very different from C++ and if M$ will support the .NET version of C++ more than normal C++, Visual C++.NET will gain more market.

MS is a company that have a hard time to support and promote the public standard, They rather come up with there own implementation. They don't mind bending C++ to fit there need even if it will not have the form that the standard promotes.
