So I am planing my next big project. I am doing this mainly to learn and eventually get a job as a programmer. My two option is
1. Standard 3 tier inventory program with VC++ and mfc interacting with an SQL/ADO database, using Com and ATL
2.Some networking/Xwindows project on linux. Haven't really finalized what a good project would be. Seems like there will be alot of demands for Unix/linux programmers in the future.
Anyone have any thoughts about what would be the best way to go?
I make my living knee deep in data warehousing/management apps and we're always understaffed, as most of my colleagues I talk to. Database development/management isn't exactly "fun", so I guess that's what leads to the shortage of developers (at least in my area).
You could always do a search on Monster and see which area has the most job listings.

I thought the shortage of developers was due to caffeine and sugar overdose. Especially at places where the programmers get free drinks and candy. ;)
Our vending machine actually sells apple juice, does that sound unnatural to you too?

Apple juice?! Ugh! We don't allow that kind of stuff in the building. The closest thing to healthy that they try to pawn off on us is Brisk Tea ( which at least has CAFFIENE! ).Quote:

For us it's pop tarts, Milky Way candy bars, coffee and Dr. Pepper.
Oh, and the occasional Papa John's pepperoni pizza.:D
Our boss understands programmers.
He installed an automatic expresso machine in the reception area to feed our caffine addiction. (real coffee is very expensive here so 90% is instant)
A brutal sight Monday mornings, when a group of under caffinated programmers are waiting for the milk to arrive.
We're a pretty large corporation down here so we get hooked up good on Mondays. Several vendors looking for our business stop in bright and early to drop off treats.
All the greasy McDonald's sausage biscuits, donut holes and apple turnovers you could eat. And of course this is all chased by the strongest New Orleans coffee brewed as dark as possible. Talk about a caffiene/sugar high!

The Domino's down the street from us accepts fax orders, so we don't even have to communicate with non-programmer types except to grab the pizza and throw money at the delivery guy. And we draw straws even for that.

How retched, deliveries should never be on a Monday, it should already be there.

And you type how many words per second on that rush? Probably the only reason caffeine isn't illegal is the government is afraid of what we'll do if deprived. :D

Coke. The only real thing. Gets you both in one shot, caffeine and sugar. You can always see who is a programmer and who is from Marketing. If he's getting the real thing, it's a programmer. Light or Cherry or whatever else is for marketing people ;)

Do #1. It will teach you a lot and look good on your resume.

I got dropped on a project writing SQL Server 2000 communications via SQLOLEDB provider in C++. Its actually pretty neat what you can do with it. I hadn't done any thing like this prior, so I spent the first 2 weeks reading documentation...
Now the customer thinks I'm an expert ;)
As for free beverages:
we have three choices,
Coffee,
Tea,
Instant Decaff in single-serve pouches...
The pouches are all covered in dust :) go figure...

O and another question.Should I state how much caffine and sugar I can handle on my cover letter or should it be on the resume?
Welcome back from your vacation adrianxw. I am passing through copenhagen in july on my way to sweden. To bad I will only see the airport, it would have been nice to see copenhagen again
