I don't think that any of you are in Huntsville, AL, but if you are I'm in need of a job (as of 2:30 this afternoon). I any of you work in Alabama, or around Atalanta, GA and know of a job opening for a Linux OS/Software developer, please patch me a line.

It's rough times, right now. Don't expect to find steady work very quickly unless you're lucky. If you need to maintain an income and don't think you're going to get a day-to-day job for a while (a few months), then consider doing some freelance stuff. There are always people that need some coding done and you'll be even better off if you have some good web design experience.
One word: iPhone. Buy a Mac, learn some Objective C, and have at it. You can make a lot with one or two iPhone apps. Apple skims 30% off the top but it is still a good way to make money on the side and possibly as your primary source of income if you have enough apps out there.
Sorry to hear about your situation, but I know you will find something else regardless of the current state of the economy. Keep us informed and best of luck.

I don't think you'll find much for decent pay. The only jobs I've seen lately have the requirements padded out so far your resume would need to enter the room several minutes before you. I think my favorite was one with "at least 5 years of experience" in both FORTRAN and C# with a "networking focus" backer. (I'm not joking.)
I second the freelance suggestion if you need the income. I "telecommute" when necessary and do a lot of freelance stuff.*

* And by "a lot of freelance stuff" I mean I even need to supplement my income with jobs outside of the programming/development world. I'm a general contractor, a freelance cable monkey, an electrician, a plumber, and I even work with some HVAC stuff.
Is it an absolute requirement that the job be in Alabama or Georgia?
While you're looking for work, you might as well submit resumes to many of the big names.

Not to sidetrack the discussion here, but isn't housing in Europe more expensive than housing here in the States, and thus the more expensive housing would negate whatever higher wage he might receive?

Why don't you check with universities in the area?
1. Universities often have "job boards" both in the common student centers and in the respective departments. I know while I was at BYU the CS department had a board on the wall with a large collection of job openings/advertisements, and so did the main student center on campus. Mind you...these were external jobs, not university jobs. I'm sure this is probably a common practice among most universities, so try driving to your local university, find the CS department, and see if they have anything of the sort.
2. While you're at this said university, you could randomly see if they have any on-campus job openings as well.
3. Also while you're at this said university, you could see when the next job fair is, because universities very often have job fairs where they invite employers to come advertise their companies and find new employees/interns.
Yeah, that's probably a good idea. UofA at Huntsville is up here. Right now the wife and I are working through the local chamber of commerce job listings. There are lots of jobs here, but like 75-80% of all of them are Secret clearance required. I've not held a clearance in 6 years -- that's three years out. . . and it wasn't even secret level, it was just below.
We are looking at jobs elsewhere in the country. I mean, we've got a little on in the hopper and will be here around 9 October.

I actually found out about this Tuesday a week ago. Tuesday night I had something to do. Wednesday night I looked for a job for a while. I found something interesting here in Huntsville. I WROTE DOWN the number of the place to call them on the morrow (as it was well after 1 am and I didn't have my resume updated). Thursday of last week I came home from work to find my computer off. I said aloud "Why is my computer off?" The wife replies, "Oh yeah, this afternoon while Jaxom was watching Scooby-Doo it just turned off." So, Monday night of this week (after my screw-up in ordering the wrong memory) I was able to get the sucker to turn on. I was able Wednesday night to locate my most up-to-date resume and start e-mailing it out. The other ironic thing is that the wife had a netflix movie: "The worst week of my life".
My situation is no where near as bad as his was, but man oh man I feel his pain.

Is there some reason you don't want to renew your clearance? Are you capable of passing at the top secret level or just some of the lower ones?
An individual does not have the option of renewing a clearance. The agency for which you work does that, at great cost. My clearance has been inactive for 6 years (3 years is the renewal date).Quote:

I saw that yesterday. That listing is a bit different than the one I saw. The one I saw said that the person had to have (also) strong OO development and have much experience with UML. I know of UML but have never used it. I've looked through careerbuilder and I have found something interesting on the north east side. I did apply for it yesterday. We'll see. Currently, I've applied for about 65 Jobs in the last 3 days. I have heard from a few, some I was rejected out of hand due to having too much experience -- I actually got e-mails saying "we have reviewed your resume and have decided that you are over qualified". I guess they are thinking I'd be out the door again in a couple of months; they're probably right. Something that trivial would probably not hold my attention.Quote:

UML is a cakewalk. I would say someone with any experience could learn most of what UML class, sequence, and use case diagrams have to offer within a week or two...if that long. I've not found much use for the other types of diagrams from a programmer perspective.Quote:

Enterprise Architect makes UML simple and Visio does as well although not as robust.

Edit: Oh and the process for a TS clearance does take several months at least. No way around it. Even as a military member it took me several months to get approval. TS is an extensive process. Secret clearance is a lot easier to get.
At last (after two months) I have landed in a GREAT company! So, I do appreciate all of yalls help!
I even got to stay in Huntsville.
Edit: And, TBD is due any day now, so we'll actually have insurance to cover him/her.
