Please help converting Fahrenheit to Celsius

You are assigning a value in the part of your loop where you should be controlling how it stops. (Hint: The middle portion. = is assignment == is comparison.)

Also, instead of just putting some large number of getchar()s at the end of your program, you could write something like this:

What do you mean by assignment? I'm trying to understand this.

A for loop has three basic parts:

1) The initial assignment:

someVariable = 0; //for example

2) The test to see if the loop should end:

someVariable < number;
someVariable == number;

are common tests in a for loop.

3) The increment (or decrement):

someVariable++;
someVariable--;

are common

In your program's case, the end test condition is:

1) Wrong, since it needs a comparison operator ==, not an assignment operator =.
2) The range is far too high. If the user enters 70 degrees Fahrenheit, your loop will continue until the temperature reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit (5 * 70).

That's way past T shirt weather! :p :p

Figure out what your assignment requires for a reasonable range, and then set it up with a test comparison ==, not an assignment, OK? :)

The assisgement I was given just ask the end user to enter in ANY temp. to convert F to C. My teacher told me to go fish.

You will have to figure out what you want for your top temperature. I'm sure your assignment doesn't want the range to go up to 5 times the temperature entered by the user.

You just had the number 5 on your brain, I'll bet.

The assignment reads convert Fahrenheit to Celsius temperature in increments of 5 degrees. The initial value fo the Fahrenheit temperature and the total conversions to be made are to be requested as user nput during the program execution.

Compute the stop value first.

I'm just trying to finish my associates degree in programming. I'm a little bit older with two young children who require my attention all the time so I don't have hours to research and read my C programming book. I'm not looking for and easy out for this class, I love programming I just am having a hard time understanding the FOR statement that I have to use for this assigenment. Write a C program that converts Fahrenheit to Celsius temp. in increments of 5 degrees. The initial value of the Fahrenheittemp. and the total conversions to be made are to be requested as user input during program execution.

I really don't see the light when it comes to using the FOR statement but that is what my teacher requires me to use. I can think of different ways to do this program that would run just fine to but that is not what the teacher wants. Like I said I'm older and I took classes 10+ years ago like cobol, fortan DOS and advance DOS which I got all A and B's in these classes so I'm just a bit rusty at this.

You have my sympathy, but you'll have to step it up - regardless. For loops are a very basic loop in C, used all the time, (in every language I've seen), and not hard to understand.

Your assignment requires you to ask the user for the starting and ending temperature. That must be done before any for loop can start.

Ask for a start temperature

Ask for an ending temperature

(these will both be in Fahrenheit)

The you need your for loop:

Your results will not be completely accurate, because integer division drops the fractional part of any division. If you need greater accuracy (to less than 1 degree), then you'll need to make all your variables floats or doubles.
