Hiatus
So I haven't had much time for programming the last month or so since I just started a post-grad course (training to be a maths teacher) and things have been a little hectic.
Needless to say when things start to settle down and I get into a bit more of a routine I'll open up the IDE. But I was wondering what's the longest you weren't able to program for? Since I was never an accomplished programmer and am still learning I daresay I will have to go back and remind myself of a lot of things when I do start again ^_^
Did the break have any effect on you?

If it means anything: I'm about 18 now, started when I was roughly 11, and from the age of 12 to 13 I didn't really program that much (I knew some C and perl back then.) At that early of an age it probably had no real, long lasting effect; then again, it's really a function of time.
In the shorter term, I sometimes go about a month or maybe some weeks without writing a line of code - I've never found it to really hinder me that much, sometimes stepping away gives you time to work on the problem in the deeper parts of your brain.

I picked it up again a little while ago for the first time since last May or so probably. Usually I'll write a lot of code and just burn myself out and stop for a while. Lately I've taken the approach of doing some here and there as I feel like it. Enough to keep my mind active without taking too much away from the rest of my life.

I think programming is mostly like riding a bike: once you learn how to do it you're going to basically know how to forever. If you were very inexperienced when you quit you're probably going to have to relearn a lot.

Hehe, well I've had to read over my old A-level maths books and it's surprising how much of that I had forgotten, stuff I never even used in my degree. Thankfully a quick read over the chapter and I was back up to speed. I don't think it'll will be that easy to remember all the programming stuff I learnt (I'm a lot better at maths than programming) but hopefully I won't totally be back at square one :)
