I know this is a bad question but i can not seem to figure out how many switches i will need to hook up 1000 hosts and 5 servers to the internet and an WAN???
I am using Cisco Catalyst 3560 with 48 ports (unless there is something better by cisco).

He probably means - that you want to configure some sub-networks, so intensive data communication between 2 computers connected to one switch will not affect performance of the whole network (and more drastic) will not go out killing the bandwith of your internet connection...
This means you probably need something more intelligent than just switches...

Whats your network topology going to be like? Is it going to be lots of star networks, extended star networks, or one giant extended star? Are there going to be different subnets? If so then how many? Maybe start off by drawing a plan start off with how many routers/subnets you are going to need, sort out the addressing, then break it down. I'm no professional here, but thats what I would do anyway. From what I can tell your question is to vague to get the answers you are looking for, except maybe a recommendation for a switch.
