    Connecting laptop to desktop

    Yes yes yes, i know this has been brought up 3 times before, but I cannot seem to get this to work. I have a crossover cable and I connected it into both computers, but it keeps on saying network cable unplugged so I can never connect them! im using xp home and its getting really frustrating!

    hmm... bad cable maybe? If it's a crossover cable, then windows should recognize that there is a connection.

    well, i got it to work by connecting them with a straight cable and then connecting them again with the crossover!

    if you have a working connection (cable and nics) and the os is configured for that particular type of network, it should be like accessing any other "shared" resource (print, file, etc.) just browse the system how you wish at that point.

    <edit1>

    Possible Networking Issues.

    (1) Both nics dead
    (2) one of the two nics dead
    (3) cable bad
    (4) os not configured.
    (5) files not shared

    I just noticed you said you can get it to work with cable and nic when set up differently.

    Sounds like an os configuration issue.
    Did you configure xp to recognize that type of network connection before connecting the cables?
