    The guidelines!!

Well the instructor has written following in the course outline!

Projects include but are not limited to:
    • Developing/extending intrusion detection systems
    • Developing new intrusion detection algorithms/models
    • Developing firewall systems
    • Developing anti-virus and worm detection systems
    • Implementation and demonstration using Java security architecture
    • Implementation and demonstration using C# security architecture
    • Implementation of secret key cryptography
    • Implementation of public key cryptography
    • Implementation of VPN

But i dont know which project to choose and where to start! Since we have summer quater of 1 month and we havent study anything.

That's mind boggling! I hate it when teachers give students projects with vague, broad guidelines. I can't think of any projects myself, but a good idea may be to speak to students who have already completed that class, to find out what's hot and what's not. Good luck.

You could develop a program that detects ARP spoofing, to prevent sniffing on a switched network. The reason I thought of it is that I'm doing this ATM.

If I were you, this speaking from my own experience, I would choose to make a virus/worm detector. The reason being that it is fairly easy to develop a reference file, that includes a virus' name and what filenames/regentries it goes under, and search the harddrive for the filenames, and the registry for its entries(this is usually pretty easy as they usually only add entries the the run key under /Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion).

how advanced does the anti-viral/worm program have to be? I mean, does he expect you to implement a system based on heuristics to detect virus versions not yet released?
