    Network Problems!?!?

I posted this in a different thread but no one there seemed to be able to help me. I have also changed some hardeware changes from that post.

I am using a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router with 8 port switch,
serial # befsr81. The back of the router has 9 slots. 1-8 are ports to hook up computers (numbered 1-8). The 9th slot says internet, which is where my ethernet cable from my cable modem is running. I configured my Main PC to communicate with the router already using the setup disk that came with the router and I even tried configuring it manually.

I am trying to set up a network with 3 computers, all computers are running XP Pro. My current configuration is as follows:
    Code:
    Main PC:
Connected directly to the cable modem through usb.
Also connected to port slot #3 in the back of my router.

    2nd PC:
Connected to port slot #2 on the back of the router.

    3rd PC:
Connected to port slot #1 on the back of the router.
I have ran the Network setup wizard on all computers. They were all set up to run on the "My computer connects through this computer or a residential gateway" connection. Firewals are disabled. Here are the connections listed in my network connections for the Main PC:
    Code:
    Main PC
-Local Area Connection 9 Enabled Realtek rtl8131 Family
               PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

-Local Area Connection 3 Moterola Surfboard 4200
               Enabled, Shared

    Second PC
-Local Area Connection 17 Linksys LNE100TX Fast
                Ethernet Adapter Enabled, Firewalled

    Third PC
               -1934 connection 11 Enabled 1934 net adapter
               -1934 connection 12 Enabled 1934 Net adapter #2
-Local Area Connection 9 Enabled NVIDIA nFors MPC
                 Networking Controller
Doing it this way I can only recieve the internet on this computer. When I ping on the Main PC I get 4 reply's with 0% loss. But when I ping on the other two comptuers I get the message "Destination net unreachable". Any help would be much appreciated.

Why do you have the main PC hooked up as well as the router? Also, what ISP do you have?
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

I have the main pc hooked up to the router for my network. The only way I can get internet connection is if my cable modem is connected directly to my computer through usb. Am I doing that wrong? My IPS is my local cable company, CableONE. I know they allow me to network, without additional charges, because I used to have 2 computer on a semi-working network before.

1/ Turn off main PC, router and modem.
    2/ Remove the USB connection.
    3/ Start up the modem.
    4/ Start up the router.
    5/ Start up the computer.
    6/ Browse (hopefully).

I feel stupid asking this but do I need to run the router setup wizard on each computer I have?

    - Can computer 2 and 3 ping the gateway(the main computer)?
    - Are you using DHCP? If so, have you got DHCP disabled on the router(otherwise the
router will be providing computers 2 and 3 with incorrect network addresses)? <-- This is a strong suspect for your troubles.
    - Can you provide us with the output of ipconfig /all on all three computers?
    - Since you are not using any of the routing capabilities of the router, do you have a 'dumb' switch or hub that you can use instead?
    - Due to the way nat works(either through ics or the router) you will probably not be able to ping arbitary internet sites from computers 2 and 3.

Ok, Can I assume you are using a linksys router? The gateway on the client computers is set to "192.168.1.1" which I suspect is a linksys router. What seems to be happening is that the computers are picking up their network information from the router which is not connected to the network instead of the gateway computer which is connected to the internet.

If I am right, you need to go into your router setup page(type "192.168.1.1" in your browser address bar) and disable DHCP.

On the router. You can use any computer to connect to the router and turn off DHCP.

Once that is done, type ipconfig /renew on computer 2 and 3 to renew their network configuration. Or just reset everything.

An error has occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 20 :Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

I can no longer configure the router with my first coputer.
Also on the second computer I have a nic that I an not using. Should I remove it from the computer?

Would un-installing my cable modem from my main pc help anything? I think what its doing is (since cable modem is connected to main pc with usb) trying to give me two isp addresses on 1 computer and canceling the intire connection to the router.???

Did you disable DHCP on the router before that happened? If computers 2 and 3 can not use ipconfig /renew then DHCP is not running.

If DHCP on the router is disabled and it is still not working, then I think the problem must be with the gateway computer.

Just double checking, nothing is plugged into the router uplink port, right?

So back to basics on the gateway(main) computer:

Check this site and see what is different.
    http://www.viperlair.com/articles/so...ng/ics_3.shtml

    - Two network connection should show up.
    - One should be the connection to your cable modem and the other to your local network.
    - When you right click->properties->Advanced for the cable modem the "Enable connection sharing" box should be ticked.
    - When you right click->Properties->Click on TCP/IP properties for the local network connection it should be the same as shown in the link. That is an ip address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0 with everything else blank.

Thanks for all that helped. I zero'ed in on the problem. The computer I was using as a main PC just flat out sucked(I should have know to suspect that from a windows/pentium machine). That computer was the main source of the problem. I switched computer 3 with my main computer and it booted up from the get go! Thanks again....I learned a lot about networking....to bad none of it helped me solve my problem though. Thanks
