WinSock / DirectPlay IPX to UDP

Anyone know about writing a WinSock or DirectPlay IPX to UDP convertor? as in... writing a hook dll patch?

As a packet sniffer?

Not sure how it works. Basically there's this very old game (eg. Command & Conquer GOLD 95) that used IPX. A ex-Westwood Studio employee, EastonRoyce, wrote a IPX to UDP patch:

IP Banned

Then someone Scorpio9a wrote an even better patch to support more players: Understorm

I also read someone wrote a DirectPlay 4 to DirectPlay 8 wrapper: DirectPlay 8 for SS2 Multiplayer - TTLG Forums for the game System Shock 2 & Thief 2.

Clan SY wrote a DirectPlay hook to record the transmitted packets for the game Total Annihilation.

Someone wrote a IPX patch for the game Atomic Bomberman: Bomberman Online - Maintained by Broomop and Schthack to enable online play over UDP.

Then there's CNCNet where the program packet sniffs and converts to UDP to send across the internet.

So am quite interested in learning how to go about writing an IPX patch for some old games.. eg. Theme Hospital which used WinSock & DirectPlay IPX.

There are servers for these games on several fan sites. I just loaded up Red Alert 1 and 2 and found a site where you can play online and in tournaments. They are not exactly user friendly but they do exist and I'm sure there is already one for C&C.

I have C&C The First Decade and love it so I understand your desire to play these games online. Graphics may fade but gameplay never dies.
