    network programming

so i have just finished a c programming class at school and have a decent understanding of it, and i want to learn more even though i will be starting java in 3 weeks. I wanted to try and make a instant messenger program in c. i was looking through my java book and saw they made a im client and server in java and it didnt look too bad.

now i havent even touched network programming, i know structs, pointers, file i/o, arrays, the basic stuff.

first question is is this too much for me to handle?

and if it not can anyone point me to a good tut on network programming i have been looking around and havent really found any.

if this is something i should just wait till i learn java to do just let me know.

    thanks!

I get maybe two dozen requests for help with some sort of programming or design problem every day. Most have more sense than to send me hundreds of lines of code. If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.
