    Unhappy Need some really simple help (complete Linux newbie)

    This hasn't really anything to do with linux programming, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
    I just installed Red Hat 7.1 on my computer (it was just a couple of minutes ago) and I have a quite embarrasing problem right now. The thing is, I happened to chose "Start Gnome on startup" while installing. Now when I'm inside Gnome I can't figure out how to return to text mode.
    When I try to log out the only options I have are halt, reboot and logout (which simply produces a dialog box for logging in again).
    I've searched through the entire help files supplied with Gnome and I can't find anything about this, nor anything about unselecting to start Gnome in the beginning.
    How do I do this?

    ctrl + alt + f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, or f6 ---to get a login terminal from X
    alt + f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, or f6 to switch between logins
    alt + f7 to return to X

    Hmm..Totally stop X? What I would do with a new installation like yours, is just reinstall Linux totally. Now, if you just want console, just open a console window.
    What will people say if they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?
    What will people do if they find that it's true?

    there's no reason to reinstall anything. i gave him the correct answer. those commands do not stop X.

    Well, I do want X, but I want text mode too. And having thought twice I don't want X to start every time I boot the computer.
    Surely there must be some way to remove that option (starting gnome on startup)?

    Hi,

    I've never used RedHat myself, but there must be a main config file that includes a setting for your startup level. If you set that one to a value for console, it should work. I can't tell you where that file is located on a RedHat system and how it's called, but it must be there It doesn't have anythin' to do with the Gnome windowmanager, it's the basic config file for the RedHat Linux system. Have a look at the manual...

    I'd guess it's in the /etc directory like on most other Linux distributions. Under a SuSE Linux it's "rc.config" for example.

    Never mind, I found it myself. Just needed to change the inittab file.

    I think XConfigurator can set it to start or not at bootup. I've never had this problem, because I reinstall Linux all the time, because I always find ways to screw things up.

    Did you change the default runlevel from the /etc/inittab?
