    Internet on Linux

    ok, I just got Suse Linux 9.0 and I don't know how to get on the internet. I've got a broadband connection to my winxp os but i need it on the linux. I've already configured my network adaptor but it doesn't recognize my DSL modem, I guess cause its from AOL

    Anyway, is there a way to get my broadband to my LinuxOs?
    or am I just stuck with dial-up. Which brings me to my next point..
    any suggestions to some software for Linux to dial up to? for the net.

    Please help

    is your broad band use ethernet or something else. If its ethernet then you will have to open this file every time your computer starts in linux;

    /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

    That is a script witch will allow you to connect to networking cards such as ethernet and other things.

    Hope that helps!

    I know that Suse 9.0 uses the browser Mozilla but i just don't know how to set up to dial or what ever it does

    type into the console :

    "./etc/rc.d/rc.inet1"

    the ./ in front of it tells it to try and execute the pointed at script or file.

    dang Linux will chew you up and spit you out if you don't know what your doing..and I don't know what i'm doing.

    Ok. its not automatically dectecting my network card, so I configure it myself.. but I don't know what the heck i'm doing..

    I got a dial up modem but unfortunatly its a winmodem. I read somewhere that you can't you winmodems with Linux. Any suggestions there?

    I also have a broadband connection which is how i'm connected to the net now. The dsl is not always connected, just when I sign onto aol, so thats a PPPoE right? i'm so lost.

    I know i'm being bother some but Im so good at windows, I feel like a child on Linux.
    I'll try to search for the drivers, but then if i do get them to disk. I don't know how to run it. the console wants to be gay. How do i change directories?
    something like cd [-L|-P] /home/user/desktop ? ? ?

    anyway..please help any way you can. I know this is alot and all but Im really anxious to get onto the net with my LinuxOS =)

    oh and for the winmodem, it says i need a Itmodem packet..but I look on the net and on my Linux distro cd. I can't find it. =(

    Well, I suppose u r really mired up in a big problem..

    Tell me first which desktop are u using ? KDE/GNOME...
    If u find a Big 'K' in a place where Start Menu Button is placed in WIndows then it is KDE Desktop.

    Press Alt-F2/ALt-F3 or something like that .. and a Command Window will open up.. much similar to RUN WIndow in WINDOWS...

    Then type

    ./etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

    Now tell what u c at the screen...

    type

    netconfig

    into the console. Some box will open up. Fill in the information there. You can get it on the sticker(if any) on the modem or read the manual that comes with your modem. If you don't know something try guessing. After that. type into the console;

    /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

    without "."

    when doing this make sure you are disconnected from dialup on linux.

    Hope that helps!
