Question Linux for Windows?

Hey Guys,

My bro got me a copy of Linux for Windows, its Linux-Mandrake thats got KDE and GNOME as Desktops(not sure what versions). And thats about it. My question is... will this work? I'm trying to get a mud codebase to compile, it requires linux kernel 2.2.x and also something about zlib library and support for POSIX threads. I understand I will have to download a compiler or something of the sort to compile the code... I'm not too familiar with linux in general except for a bit of command line syntax to get code to compile and run under a linux server. The documention with the linux-mandrake is very limited, and it only came on one CD. It seems to be a barebone linux with a desktop.

Any resources/help/advice on how to see what version the linux kernal is, or if this will work at all? Or maybe where/what compiler to get and all that? Also, would it work under VMware Workstation to run windows and linux at one time(use visual C++ as my coding ide, and compiler under linux... maybe I can use an emulator?).

ANY help is MOST appreciated. Thank you very much.

Sincerly,
Jase

p.s. If it won't work, the package was 20 bucks, I saw mandrake(or redhat) for 30 bucks at the same place in the past... could probably return the package and get that instead and use it with vmware... thanks again.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

What I mean by the require 2.2.x, is the code that I added to the my mud codebase the guy had said that it requires the linux kernal 2.2.x

I suppose I'll find out. thanks again.

I dont get!!!
If you mean kernel you are using, try $uname -a.
Or if you mean the latest kernel, go linux kernel
