    Linux Bootable Live CD

I've got the book Hacking: The Art of Exploitation by Jon Erickson, the book has a live CD which provides a Linux based hacking environment, it doesn't seem to be working on Ubuntu as I think it's meant to be used on Windows, does anyone have any ideas or ways around this?
    Thanks

I'm not very crlear what is your problem. If you have a bootable cd - you should be able to boot from it no matter what is installed on your comp.
So Are you able to boot the from the cd?

Or some "hacking" functionality provided after boot is not working while you are trying to hack host's Ubuntu?
All problems in computer science can be solved by another level of indirection,
except for the problem of too many layers of indirection.

The problem is I can't seem to get it to boot from startup and I can't boot find a way to boot after startup so I assume the files are only programmed to work for Windows

Some computers require "something extra" to boot from a CD, such as holding down a specific key.
