LAN emails

I need to send /receive mail from/to computers in my LAN. I tried various programs (mailx, postfix) and searched for tutorials but without success.
I think this must be a simple thing to do, but I'm not be able to....can someone help me sending a link or steps to follow to realize it?
I'm using UBUNTU 7.10 and my network configuration is:
1 linux server connected to 4 PCs with linux installed. The server share an internet connection, but I prefer exchange mail internally without go out in internet if possible.
