Folding@Home Cboard team?

Anyone want to join up with me on the Folding@Home program and start a cboard team? I've almost got one complete WU finished, I'm at 1100/2500. Team #43476.

For those who don't know what Folding is, more info can be found here:

Yah, looks like you guys did, before I got here though.
SETI@home

Didn't realize you'd tried it before.

Well, if people still want to do it, feel free to join up, no obligations or anything.

Switch to BOINC, you can run several different projects at the same time. I run all of the BOINC enabled projects available, (although LHC is not accepting new members at the moment).

Note, classic Seti@Home switched to BOINC last summer and the old system will be closing in about a month.

BAH... BOINC only works on star crap... I'd rather put my pc computing time towards something worth it like finding cures for diseases.

By the way, I join the FAH cprog team and already completed 2 units.

anybody part of any whatpulse teams? I am, but was wondering if anybody wanted to start a Cboard team...

edit: I'm in on folding - it's looking for something actually worth looking for, and you can control how much of your CPU it's using.

What's the meaning of 400 and 2500 up there? Is it like the WU size? Mine both 2500 for desktop PC pentium 2.8ghz and laptop duron 1.0ghz, with the same configuration (the default).

I dont know why but i always get this error when i off my computer, manually shutting the program results in the same error in the log file.

Is there any page where we can check the meaning of these errors ?
(it´s not in their faq though, unless i overlooked it ...)

I just started it. Which side of the bar where you configure CPU usage is 100%?
How long does a frame take for you guys? For me its about 16 min

Laptop duron 1.0ghz 6m:53s/frame
Desktop pentium4 2.8ghz 1m:12s/frame

Both CPU slide bar set to the rightmost; laptop's task manager reports 100% CPU usage, desktop 50%.

not sure about my other two puters, but this is my fastest one. I'm currently at 2025 out of 2500 for this work unit.

Work Units

yeah, one work unit takes me about 30 minutes on 40%

what work units are you working on... mine is p1132_l939_k12m_355k

find out what you're really working on here includes deadlines and a pretty picture (if you click description), among other things.

I have my P4 3.4GHz at 100% and my wife's P4 2.4GHz at about 80%... Mine takes about half the time hers does for a frame, but I haven't looked to see what % of the CPU is actualy being used. And I put both of mine under the same name.

We're doin' pretty good so far with this Folding@Home team, in 2 weeks we've jumped in to the top 20% and still climbing. So far I think we've been doing about 2 WU's a day which is really good. Let's get some more people here joinin' though! I'm sure there's a lot of people here with spare computers lying around!

I tried putting the mac os x GUI and CLI on my mac os 10, but if I hit display protein in the gui it will start and then start 10 seconds later and freeze. With the CLI it won't respond to any of my commands whatsoever. Anybody know what I should do besides throw the mac out the window?

I saw that a F@H BOINC client was in beta at one of the BOINC sites. Great I thought, I'll be able to do a bit of F@H as well. I went to the F@H site to get the details. Couldn't find anything official so went to the forums.

Wow, you mention you are interested in a BOINC system and you get ROASTED man. They believe they can do it alone. Fine, instead of giving them my CPU cycles, I'll give it to someone else.

With a welcome like that, F@H deserves all it doesn't get.

Quick question...

I've been running 2,500,000 steps for at least a day of processor time now using the console app. It it only 32% (800,000) done. I have it set to use no more than 50% (noise control for my fan), but this seems excessively long from what I've been reading.

Anyone know what might be up?

Some WU's take a long time to do, just depends on the luck of the draw.

Some do take a very very long time, first one i did had 2500 frames .
By now ive finished 3 WU , 2 of 250 frames each and one of 250 frames.

Its really just luck wether you have a big WU or a small one, but your "points" are not calculated by how many WU´s you finish but rather by the size and time it takes to finish them.

Hello there... I guess I will be adding some of my processing power to this group. Party on...

**Edit: Are you guys using the GUI or the Console version? I was thinking of going console on all my computers.

Yeah... after I saw that it ran in the background, I decided to run the GUI as well.

Two computers down... two to go.

Anyone know how I can change the options in the console without reinstalling it? I waited until it finished the last WU so I could -config it, but it never game me a chance to type before moving on to "Finishing a Frame (1)" etc.

I'm sure you could download the GUI version and control it that way. I don't know squat about the console version, however. Did you look at the FAQ on their site?

Yea I did, it tells you the commands, but not what you need to do to type them in. I'mk nearing the point of going GUI, but I don't want the graphics or other nuicances that come with it.

The GUI isn't that annoying... hell, I never even see it unless I want to. It's just a tray icon with features to me.

try running it with the --config switch... I forgot exactly what it was called, but I do remember there being a switch to configure and run, and another to run only (using the latest *nix version)

clarification: I think once it's running it's running... the only way to configure it is before it starts... as in you stop it and restart it with a switch.

I was using the GUI version but my fullscreen apps kept on losing focus to it. So now I'm using the console version.

Argg...anyone got project p1476_tet_2nm? It's obscene...126006 atoms and 125 frames (the project website says 100, but it's lying). Sure, it's worth 364 points, but it'll take more than 23 days to run on my machine.

[edit] My bad...apparently the GUI version is lying about the estimated time to finish until it finishes the first couple frames or so. Looks like it'll only take 43 hours.

I just found a (semi) GUI version for you KDE users out there...

http://members.shaw.ca/khessels/kfolding/index.html

it still runs the console version, but it also has a nice applet you can put on your taskbar that shows it's progress... it also (supposedly - see below) has something like the windows GUI version, where it draws the molecule you're computing.

below: That part isn't working on my system--it comes up, but the options are all greyed out and the window doesn't render anything at all. but the progress bar applet is working.

edit: it probably does work, but I f'ed something up and OpenGL isn't working on my box...

I think this thing is losing steam. I was gone for 4 full days with my computer off and no one has replaced me as #1. What is going on?? Where is your dedication, people?

recently I've been out of it... for 3 days I was busy installing and configuring a new OS (on the same box), so progress just wasn't... but now I have FAH loaded on both OS's, and I seem to be able to spend enough time on them to get work done for it... I just completed two units recently...

I'd probably be #1 by now, but every once in a while my dad restarts the computer when I'm at school and doesn't log in on my desktop...By the sound of it, though, I won't be keeping my #2 rank for long heh

Actually, there was about 6 or 7 people that started before I did. And I haven't been doing it for long. I'm just trying to push you guys. If we're going to do this, let's not half-ass it. That's all I'm trying to say.

I agree... hopefully this won't fall on it's face like so many other projects... and sand_man needs to be taken outside and shot in the head...
