Why do I get a message saying that I am not logged in when I try to preview my question. Before hitting preview I checked to see if I was logged in and I was. This is about the fifth time this has happened to me. Very frustrating.

You probably took too long to post and so your session expired in the meantime. You could check the checkbox to keep you logged in when you log in, or more generally to avoid mishaps, you could write your post in a separate text editor then copy and paste it here.

"Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

The facilities for previewing and making posts for this site are behind a username/password wall (Sometimes called a reverse proxy). So when you try to use them without being logged in the server will respond and let you know that you aren't logged in. I've noticed that I will be logged out automatically after a time, which I assume is because I'm not allowing cookies for this site (just a guess), so the authentication fails.

Laserlight's suggestion of writing your post in a text editor is the best option, because most other server errors will cause your post to simply be lost. For instance if you are already authenticated an then there is a Database error or whatever, then your post will just be lost.
