    D&D Game Collection

    ^_^v

Okay, I don't work for "Good Old Games", but I do realize that this could be construed as an advertisement.

If that's the case, feel free to delete the post, but otherwise, you should seriously consider grabbing this collection because these games awe awesome.

    They also make up a chunk of what I actually did in college. ;_;

    [Edit]
Well, I can't speak for two of them, but the others are great.

    "This promo has ended."

I got excited for a second, thinking this had something to do with the pen and paper version. Man, I miss second edition. My friends and I are currently playing Pathfinder campaign - it's pretty decent, but still not as good as second edition IMO.

    O_o

Yeah, it was a limited sale; sorry you didn't get to it in time.

Though the video games massage some things for the sake of playability, several of those games use exactly the same rules as the "P&P" version.

Actually, just between you, me, and the internet, I think sticking too closely to the rules is what makes "The Temple of Elemental Evil" a lesser game.

    ^_^

    I still have my "D&D 2" books.

Anyway, I gave "Pathfinder" an over when "D&D 4" went nowhere for me. I liked it fine, but eventually I moved back to using homegrown rules evolving from "Old Caster's"; it works better for us thanks to less finicky rules.

Doesn't bother me much - I stopped playing computer games a while back so I could get other things done (I have a bit of an addictive personality, so giving up games was a must for me personally to accomplish better things).

Me too - recently put proudly on display on the living room with the rest of my "library" (I'm a book fiend).

My friend and I started AD&D when we were twelve years old, and spent over a decade, on and off, with second edition AD&D. Third edition was a bust, and fourth was so far removed that we had no interest in it. We settled on Pathfinder - but unlike our younger years, we don't have the time to master the rules, so it was really a mish-mosh of AD&D 2nd and Pathfinder rules for a while. We've since gotten past that mostly with our current group, but him and I still sort of pine for 2nd.

That was one of my favorite things about second edition - you were encouraged (and warned of the pitfalls) of taking the rules in your own direction. Pathfinder is fun and all, but it's a bit too compartmentalized IMO - too much like a game and less like an experience. It does make some things easier, but explaining THAC0 to a newb and watching their eyes cross was just too much fun.

You are talking to a person who enjoys fondling books.

Also, the smell of old, well cared for books! Yay!

That's exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about with "finicky" rules.

A dedicated player learns the rules, but if you have newbies or just in general people who don't know the rules you keep having to explain things and the play just slows to a crawl taking everybody out of actually playing the game to discuss rules.

    *sigh*

Give me simple, formal rules any day; we'll make up the difference with role-playing.
