Right now I'm sticking with Windows 7 as a desktop OS until something forces me to do otherwise. Metro is cool and all for tablets and phones and the like, but it feels like three steps backwards in the desktop space. Also, from what I understand the "desktop" application in Windows 8 is butchers in various ways and despite its appearance in screenshots, doesn't play like previous iterations of Windows does.

Windows 8 is the best operating system MS has ever created. I'm not going to do a full review again here so:

While all information given by that sentence might hold true, it does not answer the OP's question in any possible way. Have you been sent here by Microsoft's marketing office?

@ question: My advice is clearly to stick with Windows 7 on the desktop. Unless switching to linux is an alternative.

    I would go with a dual-boot Win7/Linux.
    I don't know much about Win8, though.

What are you smoking? He is asking for a recommendation, mine is clearly for Windows 8. I love that you said my answer was not in any possible way helpful and then made a simple statement that your advice is to stick with Windows 7. So exactly what did you contribute to the conversation that went beyond my contribution? Had I advised Windows 7 you would have had nothing to say, but since my suggestion is Windows 8 you somehow feel the need to attack me as if I'm working for Microsoft.

Your attack on me is silly and misplaced. Man, new guys these days.

That's not what you said. You just stated it was the best operating system Microsoft had ever made (for whatever that means and how "best" might be measured here). EDIT: no aggression intended, btw.

My statement clearly implies that since it is the best OS they have made it is better than Windows 7. Don't see how that isn't clear and obvious.

This requires me to install both, spent enough time with both and then decide.

    Correct.

Don't you imagine that such a process will serve you better than asking for opinions when you don't know anything about our requirements or use strategies?

For example, I find much of what "Windows 8" groupies forward as the best thing ever to be repellant to the point of disgust.

I mean that literally. The day after my day spent with "Windows 8" I installed a "Gnu/Linux" distribution in a "dual boot" on all of the machines I manage and left notes for everyone to the effect of "Get used to this other operating system or find another codejammer to manage things.".

So, you have two extremely different opinions about "Windows 8". On one hand you have "best thing ever" and on the other "worst thing ever".

The only way you'll know who is "right" is to try it for yourself.

Dual, triple, etc booting is very easy and has a world of uses. Think of trying both as a lesson in managing multiple systems.
