Has anyone here used satellite broadband before? What you think of it. Is it worth getting one? Did you found it more reliable and any down times you may have encountered.
I was planning on getting one, not sure yet. Think its slightly quite expensive i guess than a normal wired cable or ADSL connection. And the other great distingtion was that there is data uasage limit enposed on all satellite connection. Which i think is a bit of barrer.
Any input would be much appriciated!
I've used it. the monthly service isn't terribly expensive, but expect to spend a few hundred pounds buying the equipment and getting it installed. the reliability is also quite bad, unless it's a perfectly sunny, clear day. rain, snow, and heavy cloud cover will interfere with it, and reduce your speed to practically zero or take you offline altogether. also, don't expect to play any first person shooter games, because you can expect a minimum 1 second ping, due to the altitude of the satellites.
err that certainly doen't sound good! Considering hardly had any clearly skies as you may already know. Spending significant amount money initially and later to expect that its not a very reliable connection, isn't what anyone would expect.
Its a shame to be honest. I moved into this new place, its new built properlties and the max speed you get on ADSL is between 5 to 6meg. I've never seen anything more than 1meg so far. And last night it wasn't even a meg!
This is so bad getting really annoying!
I'm surprised you didn't know that internet speeds are marketed based on network potential. Every statement like that comes with a YMMV asterisk.
Ofcouse I understand it all replies on network capabilities. What suprises me is the fact that I am in well developed area and the ISP haven't still reached out us to improve the exisiting infrastructure.
As an alternative if you do go for satellite connections, and expect less than 1 meg which i'm already on. Why go for it?
I used to live in the country with no DSL. I got recently satellite internet with a new actually satellite with comparable to DSL up and download speeds capacities. But the reliability was indeed very bad. There were times that I could even only access certain sites. The latency was also worse than mobile broadband. So was only really good for downloading or uploading. So I would say that DSL is certainly the right path even if you get 1mb.
What I do for now is use my 4G LTE phone for all my needs and its suprisingly fast. I have tried also with 3G and for simple browsing and emails it was decent but not comparable with DSL. If you have a phone were you already pay for data connection just consider using it this way as it is then practically free (if tethering/hotspot is legal for you). This is just until you get something actually decent to spent more money on.
Poor comfort, but sometimes the bad ADSL service given to a new built estate improves with time as the service providers eventually update the hardware due to the extra demand. I moved into my house on a new state in 07 and had a max of 8 Meg. Within a year or two I got a steady 16 Meg.
