Microsoft makes a move towards open source. Microsoft forms open source subsidiary on Friday the 13th | Linux User

I don't know how new of news this is to everyone else but this is the first I'm hearing of it. I don't care what Microsoft does, open source or not, IMO they will always suck!

I find that attitude to be childish to be honest. It doesn't matter if it's Microsoft; it's open source, you should be able to write up the features you want in whatever it is. It would be nice if Windows Media Player were open source, it would mean that the program wouldn't be a toy forever.

The funniest story to come out of Microsoft over the last few days is the decision to premiumize the Bing Search API. Never mind that it doesn't work properly in its current free state, now you get to pay $40 p/m (introductory tier!) for the privilege.

I liked this closing statement from the article.

In a move that may cause shock, confusion, or no emotional change in the open source community, Microsoft has announced that today they’re opening a subsidiary called Microsoft Open Technologies. The new company will focus on open source projects, interoperability initiatives, as well as working with open source standards groups.
This isn't the first time and not the most interesting of Microsoft forays into FOSS. Other than the mentioned contribution to the Linux Kernel, Microsoft has been for quite a few years supporting OSS projects through their BizSpark program. A program that allows open source projects to enroll in a 3 year full MSDN subscription for free and obtain lifetime keys to their products.

The author of that article seems to have been living under a rock, such is his surprise. If anything, this seems like a natural move considering the company increasing interest and support of FOSS. But can't say the reaction surprises me, considering how some of the FOSS community has become so willingly unaware of the world surrounding their shell.

No programming language is perfect. There is not even a single best language; there are only languages well suited or perhaps poorly suited for particular purposes.
