    Creating mmorpg game using $100k

    Hi,

I understand creating a MMORPG game takes years and needs a full time with millions of dolars BUT what if I had sourcecode of one of these mmorpg games fully official?

If I did would it be much easier to edit the game and use a different modelling engine. Would this cut the time down alot?

Could $100k be enough to modify the game enough so it looks like a totally different game?

This is not really about C++ programming, so I am moving it to General Discussions.

Yes or no, what is the answer to you? You're going to trust us to provide you with analysis for such a business venture?

The only way 100K would be enough is if your software engineers did the work for free.

'Some' of what you need to figure out:
    • Expected return
    • Engine cost
    • Tools cost
    • Development cost

Prior to investing any money I would purchase a book or two from Amazon about the business of game development. Those will help you understand what is involved, what you should be looking at and how to estimate some of the costs and add buffers for the 'unknown' factor. Game development is not simple, is fraught with problems (as is any software development) and can bury a small company overnight if they are not careful.

Even if you had the full working source code for (random MMO), you still would have no art, no sound, no actual DB of items, no actual world built. Now lets assume they gave you all of their dev tools for creating all that art and world. You'd still have to actually create the world, and then script up all the things that actually happen in the world. That's going to take time and money.

Tools are already available for this game source, I have the full mmorpg running fine under this source. I have a few developers , 2 artist, 1 sound artist. Do you think if we made it a little different from official game like different skills/ character models /monsters and worlds but still same graphics the official company would notice us and try sue?

    O_o

"Do you think if we used the most visible and recognizable part of a game that the official company would notice?"

You have no business making a game as you can't even think properly.

I'm not sure if your familiar with the mmorpg scene but their all pretty similar. Heck didn't you see Microsofts browser mmorpg rip off of maplestory?

I believe he was referring to your lack of logic not the fact that most games in the same genre are similar.

Since when did "the amount of money thrown at a project" become a measure of its success rate?

Modifying someone else's source and claiming it to be yours is a violation of copyright laws. Maybe you can use that $100k to buy a lawyer, and then pay the suit money when you inevitably lose the case.

Also, asking if xxx amount of money is enough to modify a game is a stupid question. No amount of money will make up for your lack of programming skills, so you'd better be getting started.

That depends on the terms of the license, assuming that a license was granted and that the copyright has not expired.

Well presumably since you licensed this code and purchased the rights to these assets and tools from them, they'd be okay with it, right?

It should be in your licensing contract.
