Question Battery plugged in but not charging

    Hello all,

I have a Lenovo G560 laptop running Windows 7. Today I just noticed that the battery indicator said that the battery was plugged in but not charging and it was stuck at 79%. Then I did some Googling and realized that keeping the laptop plugged in all day was probably the culprit for this problem (something I am very guilty of). Is there a way to fix this problem without replacing the whole battery? I am also going to let the battery fully run out and then plug it in and see what happens. Thanks.

TL;DR Take it in for repairs instead of trying to self-medicine.

Don't believe everything you read on Google; I wrote some of that stuff, you know, and I'm perfectly fallible.

Keeping a laptop plugged in can't kill the battery; it's not exactly your tabletop variety alkaline. There's circuitry in it, that stop it from charging when it's full and stop it from discharging completely -- two things that could definitely kill LiPoly or LiIon if not for the aforementioned circuitry.

If it's stuck at 79% like you say, then it's possible that there is either a problem on the hardware level in the battery - in the circuitry that reports the charge level to the laptop - or in the laptop, or this could be software - wouldn't be the first case of a glitchy driver.

You could try looking for driver/firmware/BIOS updates from the laptop maker and seeing if that solves your issue. If not, take it in for repairs. Might cost you a couple of bucks, but it's better then your battery catching fire. And that could happen. No joke.
