I'll admit I was using 56k dial-up before I got the fios and it was totally fine for most of the things I do, namely cboard and browsing documentation*.

"Fine" however means I didn't have to wait very long, vs. not having to wait at all (it's instantaneous), so it's kind kind of like the processor: once you get used to a faster one, going back to a slower one (which seemed "totally fine" before) is irritating. So if you're okay with it and don't want to get addicted to something more expensive, stick with the dial-up.

* I also download/upload mb sized files fairly often, that is almost unworkable at 56k.

I can think of a few reasons of the top of my head were a home user would want that 1GB connection to the internet. None of them legitimate. This is not to say there could be a legitimate reason to have it. I just can't think of any that wouldn't clash with common sense.

That said, there's numerous interesting things that could start happening, and that we can't do today, if our worldwide infrastructures could start supporting 1GB connections as a de facto standard. But I understand that's not what you are talking about.

I would download LSD to my desktop. 1GB is probably a lot of acid, and you won't have to keep it in the freezer.
