    Oops

    Here's a oops.

    Got a letter from my bank today. About some money I have been moving lately between accounts. Third paragraph starts with "the transfer has been deposited into your account".

    Got an oops?

    Doesn't money get deposited?
    Code:
    //try
    //{
    	if (a) do { f( b); } while(1);
    	else   do { f(!b); } while(1);
    //}

    But I suppose you're allowed to transfer bits of string and dead budgerigars between accounts?

    (No, really: something like "my paycheck was deposited into my account" seems like a perfectly ordinary English sentence, and I'm pretty sure I've said it before. This doesn't really feel any different to me.)

    It's as brewbuck said. It's funds that get deposit. You don't deposit transfers. So, at the very least "The funds from your transfer have been deposited", or better "The funds have been transferred to your account".

    Naturally, I expect this to not be such a big deal in colloquial speech. But banks are always so uptight and formal in all things, including language, that the faux-pas made me giggle. So I phoned my account manager who is also an old friend from high-school and made fun of her.

    - Hey! Look there's something wrong with those transfers. The transfers were deposited into my account. I didn't want you to transfer them when I asked you to transfer the money! Now I'm screwed!

    - What?

    - Look! just get it right ok. Don't transfer the transfers. I just want my money!

    There was a small silence and I couldn't avoid laughing so I blew it. But that made my day.

    Reminds me of one of my own pet peeves: "The current flows..."

    Dammit, no. The CHARGES flow. Or water. Or whatever it is. The current just is.
    Code:
    //try
    //{
    	if (a) do { f( b); } while(1);
    	else   do { f(!b); } while(1);
    //}

    Not necessarily.

    Delta current = "the current flows"

    Just like

    Delta velocity = "woah i'm accelerating!"

    Delta current = "the current flows"
    Delta current = "the current changes speed"
    flow = velocity = current (at least in the sense that they equal delta position)

    so delta current is acceleration, not flow

    Can't the river flow from one place to another?

    But yeah, come to think of it, it really doesn't make much sense.

    We say it all the time, though. The current flows from point a to point b.

    What about this phone scenario?

    Code:
    Caller: Hi, is Bob there?
    Called: Yes.
    Caller: Can I talk to him?
    Called: Yes.
    Caller: ...? Just put Bob on the damn phone!

    Oh man! That touches one of the things that annoys me the most. When a caller doesn't identify themselves right off the bat.

    And often I make that known to them in a very clear way.

    So...
    Caller: Hi, is Bob there?
    Mario F.: Who are you?
    Caller: I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you.

    Or..

    Caller: Hello, this is [name here]. Could I please speak to [name here]

    That's good manners.
