    A very useful tool for forums

    I think we've all had those moments:

    Newkidontheblock: What is C++?
    Iamthebestestever: Google it.
    Newkidontheblock: KTHXBYE.
    Well, here's a new solution to the "just google it" problem:
    Newkidontheblock: What is C++?
    Iamthebestestever: Let me help you: What is C++?
    Newkidontheblock: KTHXBYE.
    As you can see (click the link!), not only does this point the luser in the right direction, it also shows them how to do it themselves. Win-win, right?

    Of course, posting links to google is no substitute for a well thought-out, personalized answer. But sometimes you just have to do it for the good of mankind.

    Let me google that for you

    BTW I found this on StumbleUpon... best service ever.

    The live view of peoples' searches is sometimes funny, and sometimes very disturbing, to watch
    Just now someone searched for the phrases
    "Obama is an idiot"
    "world domination"
    "how to avoid jail"
    o_O

    If I were your prof, and not some spoiled brat with near zero historical perspective due to the fact that I have been a legal adult <5 years, I would probably think blogs and wikis (and forums) are pretty f**king cool too.

    There's nothing wrong with bernt's post IMO, I hope no one takes my previous reply as intending to "burn bernt".

    Blogs suck, but the wiki concept may, in my humble opinion, be the best web innovation of the last 15 years.

    I agree, wikis are the best thing ever.

    What does blog have to do with this, though? A blog is like an online diary. I have one myself. It's not supposed to be a platform for knowledge exchange, but for socializing.

    I don't blog, and I am not a follower of any, but I am aware that a lot of the (news and programming) pages that I end up happy reading are in fact produced with blog software, so I have to admit they are probably a great idea since they really did foster a content boom on the web. Since that content is particularly text oriented, I, as a "text oriented" person, appreciate that.*

    Of course, some of the worst crap I have ever seen on the internet is also in blogs. However, some of the other worst crap I have ever seen is in the form of extremely expensive high tech corporate websites, or in other forms inaccessible to laypeople, so it would be absurd for me to jump on some bandwagon, vis, "blogs open the web to unskilled idiots" -- maybe, but since it was already open to skilled idiots, big deal.

    *I guess implicit in this is that blogs are not limited to socializing but seem to often (IMO, more often) involve "knowledge exchange". Wordpress is a big player here I think.

    Don't get me started on wikis.
    Bloody useless piece of overrated horse dung crap

    Anyway, stumbleupon is neither wiki or blogs. Just a *watch me as I make a flourish with my hand* part of the oh so precious social web. The Web 2.0. You know, that web that still runs on 30 year old technology. But it's now 2.0 because... because... why is it again?

    I see what you mean. I sometimes write about technical things, too, but it's more like a post-it thing to help random Googlers and future me. Nothing formal, and I'm sure no one takes me seriously .

    As for the web 2.0 thing, I think the whole idea is, it tremendously increased the producer:consumer ratio. Both wikis and blogs (and forums) lowered the technical requirement for publishing information on the internet. It makes the internet a two-way thing. For most people, internet used to be effectively read-only before the introduction of all those things. I welcome the change.

    I don't think it's about the technology, but how we use it.

    Oh, it's just my way of emphasying the fact wikis are fecal excrement.

    Mario has already admitted he does not understand how the search function works

    Well, technically the technology which makes "2.0" is <15 years old, altho there is a lot of confluence here between the speed of delivery (hardware) vs real evolution of software beyond taking advantage of hardware. But anyway, it's an interesting criticism.

    I have no problem with the current state of the web and I see little need for any evolution of the technology, which at this point is most likely to amount to cool things you can do in advertising.

    What do you want? If it is something that reduces the DIY potential of the web, then it is a bad idea. Right now, you don't even have to know how to program or spend any money to have a web site, and it should remain that way. Otherwise, you hand control over to the highest bidder, plain and simple, because the "expertise" will be mercenary (as it almost always is).

    I can understand how as a programmer you are always interested in ways to make more money for yourself and your employer, but that is just shallow commercialism -- a recipe for dress-up flush wonder toilets.
