    Don't Laugh During Class

I've been watching this Japanese game show where they got a bunch of comedians to sit in a classroom and watch a video of another comedian reading some English text. Apparently, this comedian really is quite terrible at English (i.e., he is not putting on a show). The "students" are supposed to keep a poker face throughout the video, otherwise...

So, can you avoid laughing in class?

I get maybe two dozen requests for help with some sort of programming or design problem every day. Most have more sense than to send me hundreds of lines of code. If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

I love this show. It's called Gaki No Tsukai (Don't Laugh), and it's a part of a comedy duo called Downtown. I've been watching their stuff for a while.

If it's the same thing I'm thinking of I watched that maybe 6 months ago. Is it where if the "students" laugh they have to submit to a beating with a cane (haven't actually clicked on your link there to verify it)?

    Looks real to me!

Ever since I can remember some NA cable stations have run Japanese games shows "dubbed" in English, where the dubbing is not translation but commentary and (generally) lame jokes. The shows themselves, however, always look way more exciting than the game shows I'm used to. Perhaps this is because the point seems to be not so much to win a prize as to avoid various forms of corporeal punishment or falling into swamps.

It's hilarious how the guy kinda uses roman numerals from twenty onwards. I wonder whether the number system in japanese language uses a count like the roman numerals. If it does, he might have been influenced by that under pressure.
    BTW, Happy Birthday, laserlight.

    Heh. Amusing.
But not worth Laughing Out Loud for (pun intended).
As for the japanese numbering system, you might say it's similar to roman.
Twenty in japanese would be pronounced as 2-10 (ie ni-juu).
Two hundred 55 would be 2-100-50-5, similar to english (ni hyaku go-juu go).
Although they also have a word for 10 000, making it difficult to understand and pronounce stuff like a million, compared to what we're used to.

There. We finally know where Elysia lives. Case closed for lack of any more evidence.

And wow! Didn't notice. Happy bday Laserlight!

My opinion is that he's just your regular Otaku. I do think he's in the area, though... if not asian, then possibly East Russia like Vladvistock (about as close as you can get to Japan). He gave his timezone away at some point in a New Years thread but I didn't look too much into it.

It hasn't occured to anyone that there are people who do it for a living? That, plus I know a specific university here that teaches both Chinese and Japanese as part of the education of 5 years.
    Just saying.

    And happy birthday, Laserlight.
Hope you have a good one.
    (And all that...)

It's like that in Chinese, too.

I would figure since Japanese borrows its numbering system from Chinese.
