101 (number) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first course in a subject taught at a college or university in Australia, Canada, South Africa, or the United States. By extension, "Topic 101" is used generally to indicate the basics of any subject.

It means the most basic introductory level course. e.g. Underwater Basket Weaving 101 would assume that students taking the class have no prior knowledge of UWBW or indeed even what a basket or water are. It's generally a spoonfeed course to give students the basic foundational knowledge they need to proceed to more advanced courses.

Colloquially it is used to mean the most basic information possible, most entry level, etc.
