Fair asking price for a desktop?

I'm looking to sell off my current desktop system, but I've been out of the hardware loop for a while, and I don't really know what a fair price would be. The specs are:

ASUS P5VD2-MX SE Motherboard
Pentium Dual-Core e2160 (1.8Ghz)
2GB DDR2 RAM
Radeon HD3850 w/512MB GDDR3
160GB SATA HDD
16x Sony DVD Writer
TV-Tuner (essentially no-name)
Antec Sonata III Case w/ Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU

I'd like to get $700 CAD for it, but I'm not sure it's worth that much, considering the price of a new machine these days.

Thoughts?

Ps, I'm allowed to post this here, right? It's not meant as an ad.

P4D, is it or whatever it's called? Worthless today, 'fraid to say. Worth < $50?
Considering you can get 4 GB of ram for ... $20, I'd say you're out of luck there.
No idea for the graphics card.
160GB SATA -> might be worth, what, < $20? Considering you can get 1 TB for around $100.
DVD Writer -> you can get these for $10-$20.
PSU... well, it didn't cost more than $50, did it? I can't see you can get much for that.

All prices are US.
I'm afraid your computer is a little too old to ask for very much.
Of course, it's only speculation.
But I do wish you the best of luck to sell it.

Good luck. Now is not the market to sell off a computer.

I recently wanted to see the asking price for the computer in my signature and had trouble getting an offer for $1000. It's fairly significantly higher specs than what you listed. Elysia's assumptions were slightly exaggerated in some cases, but he's not far off. You might be able to get $500USD for it. You're going to have to hope you find a sucker... and suckers don't generally buy used. Find someone you know is a fool and start comparing it to Best Buy and Comp USA prices, you might win someone over.

EDIT: Ooops, I changed my sig!

The computer I was talking about was an E6600 w Thermalright SI-128, P5B Deluxe w WiFi, 4GB G-Skill 1066, GTX 260 (216), Audigy 2 ZS Platinum, 2 x 250GB WD 7200RPM, 600W OCZ GameXStream, LG DVD-RW with Lightscribe, DVD-ROM, Card Reader, in a Silverstone TJ-04.

So which parts were I off for?
I have pretty much taken some of the cheapest available local prices for parts and translated them to US $.

Well for one thing, a Pentium Dual-Core e2160 is not a P4, and the market value of a similar PC with the same CPU is not as cheap as you suggest

I'm sure you can charge more for a working computer than a collection of parts . . . most people probably wouldn't want to buy a computer piecewise and then assemble it. Although I suppose it depends on the type of person you're selling it to.

The dual cores prior to Core 2 Duo were basically just 2 P4 slapped together, no?
That's as far as I know.

Pentium Dual-Core != Pentuim D. If that's what you meant. Not that it makes it much more valuable. The e2xxx CPU's are basically just stripped down C2D's.

Only person I personally know like that, just bought a netbook .

$400 USD wouldn't be so bad, but any less and I may as well keep it and use it as a personal file server or something. *sighs*. I suppose I'll have to suck it up and get a job .

EDIT: sorry, just saw whiteflags post. The Pentium D was indeed just two P4s on one chip. The Dual-Cores are based on the Core architecture, AFAIK.

And they name them PENTIUM dual cores?!
What, are you stupid Intel?
No wonder I mixed it up with Pentium D...

You can get new laptops with higher specs than that for <$400 and barebones desktop systems for $150. Now is definately not the time to be selling a computer.

Price points do not work this way. Don't they teach business in Sweden? (I kid.)

That's absolutely untrue. A desktop PC with those specs without the video cards would be $450 used and built. Add the graphics card and a TV tuner and you're easily at $450. Even if you wanted to build it yourself new and you shopped around, it'd run you close to $400. Don't forget that's a $100 case it's sitting in. That might not matter to you, but to many buyers, a good case is essential. As far as a laptop, just to get one with a graphics equivilent of the HD3850 would run you up to a grand easily.

That computer can be sold for $500, I think, if you give it a few weeks to find a good buyer. Just craigslist it at that price, you'll get an offer or two.

Alright... so where is the barebone desktop with higher specs for $150 and the laptop with higher specs for $400? Because the only $400 laptop I see in that link is this one with a single-core Celeron and an Intel IGP. It's also refurbished.... and as for the barebones you showed me, there is no comparison. You're talking about units with integrated graphics, cheap power supplies that will pop in a year, and an uncomparible motherboard and case. Not to mention it doesn't have the TV tuner card. Even if you were to buy that POS Biostar with the E2200, you'd still have to add at least the graphics, a hard drive, and an optical drive which in total would run your $160 up to $300-320. Throw in the TV tuner and you're looking at $350 minimum. That's still running on a crappy power supply in a crappy case with a crappy motherboard. Am I supposed to be convinced that his PC can't be sold for $500?

You might as well have reposted that picture of your motherboard with the P2 and ISA slots for comparison.
