World Youth Day

Tomorrow, I'll be flying off to Sydney for the World Youth Day, which is a misnomer since the event spans five days, not one

So if I seem mysteriously silent over the next two weeks, do not be alarmed. If you happen to be in the area... perhaps we could arrange to meet up, though given the plans that I already have, that could be difficult.

Australia has internet you know...

Shame, I live down in Melbourne (about 10,000 times better) otherwise we could hold an official southern hemisphere cboard meeting . Have fun in Sydney, too bad the winter has finally arrived. Do you get to fly Singapore airlines?

Ick, well I feel sorry for you. You live right in the middle of that nasty hole in the ozone layer.

Australia needs to do better by the way. Host some really badass bands at the Sydney Opera House or something -- I was somewhat shocked that a religious event was going to be the largest party Australia's thrown so far.

Ozone hole = tan = sexy . No, not really.

The Opera house is over-rated, as is the giant bridge. And the "native Australians" make up for all the partying we don't do .

You do? Oh yeah, but I will not have the time to go online... except maybe for a brief snatch or two to read email.

Anywho, good luck! Got anything fun planned? What are you going to do for 2-weeks in Sydney?!

1. Walk aimlessly around Sydney trying not to get lost.
2. Go shopping for stuff that I do not need.
3. Participate in World Youth Day.
4. Drive around to wherever my friends decide to go. (Blue Mountains?)

Roughly in that order, I think.

Missing Australia, myself. Really need to plan a couple of weeks down under sometime next year. This year, I'm already book on to Japan, next month with family. I'm very excited because it's the one country in the area I've never visited and I programmed mostly a rural tour.

You should like it laserlight. Not sure if you went there before, but get a window seat throughout the whole trip. I promise it will pay. Especially when you are doing a flyby around Sydney's Harbor. I'm totaly partial towards the South Coast. But I guess you won't have the opportunity to visit places this time. Just think of returning with friends and arrange some Melbourne-Perth car trip. Unforgettable 3 days.

We might be going there, I'm not sure. My friend who is studying there is planning that part of the trip.

Of course we will. That's why we arrive early and leave late. Just because it is officially a pilgrimage of sorts does not mean it cannot be a holiday too

I just looked at the web site and it looks like it will be a fun event. Have a good time! Are you going as an actual participant or a volunteer?

I'd say definitely go to the blue mountains. Its only a couple of hours drive and out of all the places i went to Australia that was probably the most impressive to me.

Have fun. What classifies as a "youth"? Nevermind - I'll just wait for World Crotchety Old Sourpuss Day. Probably get in free. Maybe even deliver a keynote...

I did it in 4, and drove for 11 hours each day (almost straight). My dad did it 4 times in a row over a few weeks, because we moved from Perth to Melbourne. I would recommend taking your time, and not doing it in summer. And definiatly not driving at night, otherwise you'll probably end up dead -- thanks to the cuddly wildlife.

If hunting is your thing, it's a great way to see Australia , ie Brumby shooting out of a chopper. Plus it's winter so all those deadly snakes are sleeping.

And watch out for the drop bears: Name: dropbear1.jpg
