Hello people,

I thought this might be the best place to post my problem which I have got and perhaps get some advice from you all. I know many of there are already been employed. I would like to get some advice from you all please.

I just finished my final year of my studies and now looking for a job. My results are due to me announced in two weeks time. At the movement I am applying for the jobs and it’s been a month I am looking for job. Do you all think its like too long or...? But anyway, I have posted my CV on the monster.co.uk website and applying for companies through their websites as well.

When I first posted my CV on the monster website I was getting quite a lot of calls from recruitment agencies and as the days keep on moving the no of call rate stopped reducing. I indeed had few interview. As soon my CV was on monster.

But now, I don’t get any calls from any agencies anymore. Even through I get one or two now and then. The first thing they ask me is did you had any interview and few say we have so and so vacancies with us. And they also tell me that they will email the job spec and all but not many people get back.

I think, I am making a mistake some where. When the agencies call me, and asks me that did you had any interview. I say YES I did and some times I also say that I’ve got few more in the coming week. And that’s it he never gets back to me.

So I think that’s where I am making a mistake. Is there any advice you could give me on how to answer that call. And if I update the CV on the public website will there be any changes. I want to start my career in C or C++ programming or embedded. But there are not much graduate opportunities there for them very depressing.

I actually found Monster to be a bit of a pain. They are well known yes, and a lot of people use them. Tatically, i can see nothing wrong with your ambition and drive, and you certainly have the motivation to get a job in programming.

I do also agree that most companies never get back to you when they say they will do, and this is indeed very frustrating. It took me 2 years to get a part time Job ( PC World ) and im still learning as well as working. I do not honestly think you are doing anything wrong, and it;s the people who you want to work for that are the problem. Agencies can be picky btw. If you say you have an interview and they think "oh he/she will never work or commit to us" then they never get back to you.

Keep trying and keep beleiving at it will happen for you, but do not get too discouraged. Thats all the advice I can personally give you, as I said before, you really have the passion for it.

Doesn't matter whether you say you have given interviews or not.

Ask them what positions they have open, and sell yourself for those. Be aggressive, highlight your education/qualifications...make them feel you're the right person for the position, give them the sense that you will ace an interview with the client company. They talk to dozens of candidates every single day. You have to stand out.

Thank you so much for all your replies. I thought monster website is like really very useful. But I just start realising that it’s not of that useful website. In some way it is though. There are lots of vacancies posted there on the website. But only few are from the companies it self. Rest are all from the recruitment agencies posting there. And when you apply for them they just don’t get back. This is so annoying. Perhaps when I call them and ask about the vacancies, they just take my phone number and never get back arrrrrr.

But yeah. My question is why they have to call me if they don’t want to get back to me later. There where dozens of agencies calling me everyday and if I call them now nobody picks the call lol. How annoying is that. Can’t believe these people. And in fact, if I get a job through them, I need to pay them some money as well. Does any know, how does that one works. I am sorry. I am really new to that sort of stuff.

Salem, you are right, I should be really relaxed at the movement. It’s just that I, wanted to get sorted out my job thing first. Can’t be still work as part time worker. Wanted to get started with my career. I should ask this question to you. Do you do anything related to embedded systems at your work place. Any advice on what do they expect as a starter position.

Majority of the companies hire recruiting agencies to do the recruiting for them. This is why most of the people contacting you are recruiters.

Most IT positions these days require at least 3 years of industry experience, preferrably 5. This puts new comers in a catch 22, since they don't have any experience to begin with. If you want to start getting responses, beef up your resume. Add any and every projects/internships/co-ops/jobs you've done that were related to your field.

QFT, I got the job i have now because I counted all the years of experience I had programmign as a hobby. Of course you need to have the ability to back up your claims in the interview, but it will at least get you the interview. It didn't hurt that I had recent experience in several key technologies the position involves and could discuss them at length.
