Help me in computer vision

I am doing a projects for my studies related computer vision. I am majoring intelligent system. I am stuck in the part of how do I get input from the real world. is there any library file or any tools that can use with C++. The input device is my web cam.

For what OS?

There are generic interfaces that can read webcam input, but they are different from different OS's.
