Gameplay.
I don't think you can really break that down any. its kinda in the spaces in between some of the items in our poll.
astride a storied past, thats everywhere you are
customization, although I would really pick general gameplay...but it wasn't up there.
What will people say if they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?
What will people do if they find that it's true?
I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak, there is no disguising the truth!

I dident put up gameplay because it was too general. I wanted a more specific anwser.
AI all the way, if its real hard and fun and the AI dosent cheat it will hold peoples attention for a long time, I still play Total Annihilation, just because of BAI and its so hard.
My topic a little while back was about any game, this is about strategy games, In general playability is the single most important part of a game (while a lack of others may discourage players) in a strat game AI is the end all factor (again assumeing that all the other aeras are ok to good). My topic was also more generalized graphics - gameplay - story.
Basically you need a good combination of all of the above. I picked multiplayability though i wish i could have picked more. Ease of use is also key. Nothing turns me off a game i just downloaed the demo to then being unable to figure out how the darn thing works. Its nice if the interface is intuitive. For me personally (though a lot of others disagree) the graphics aren't all that important as long as the game is fun (hell, i still play Doom, Stars!, and sometimes Warcraft). Having a unique concept is also important. Putting a new spin on something thats already been played out is sometimes good enough if theres something really different about it. (Multiplayer/Single Player options are always a bonus.)

I picked story, but I think that's more important for other game types than in strategy.

Level design is the most important, graphics don't matter much but things should be arranged to be visually pleasing. Also not being execly the same from start to finish matters a lot. There have been so many otherwise good games ruined by poor level design.
I like a bit of suprisingly clever AI, like half-life.
i think weapons/caracters or something like that. for instance, suicide dudes are funny. it should have a large selection of weapons with special powers, so not just "that one has 4 attack, that one 5, and that one 5 but you can upgrade it to 7."
You mean have special attacks lie in armada? I dislike that system.
