Don't you mean Windows? Just because you have an x86 doesn't mean you can run DirectX. DirectX is limited solely to Windows.

I'd say learn OpenGL first. I found it easier than DirectX. After you learn it you can shoot for DX. You might also want to learn SDL since you can integrate the two together. SDL is also good for sound, networking, input, etc.

Yes, but unless Linux takes off somewhere in the near future owning an x86 inherently means you are a Windows user.

I just don't think Linux is ever going to take over...I wish it would, but this is real life not a pipe dream.

Windows will always be around and they will always have the market share for the x86, games, OS's, apps, etc.

Yes, many big customers have left MS, but I don't think they are losing sleep over it yet.

There is nothing harder about DirectX than OpenGL or vice versa. I've worked with both now, although not OpenGL as much, and neither were very difficult.

    Nothing lasts forever Bubba.

I'm hoping that longhorn with its new API will force people not to upgrade at least. XP SP2 already breaking alot of programs and when longhorn comes it'll be a new story. Maybe longhorn will be a hit or hopefully it'll be an end.

One thing for sure, nothing lasts forever.
