Who says someone is using OpenGL for it's portability?
Also using an OS specific designed API is better for compatibility
and performance on that OS. If one decides to port it to another
OS, He is most likely to change certain things about it anyway,
There aren't games that you can port to all platform without
changing anything, That is, If we assume proffesional games.

    Ok, so now I'm stupid.

Notice I said "some people" and I referred him to the NeHe game tutorial article series?

I develop games for Windows systems only. I don't care if people running Linux, etc. can play games I write. I don't develop games "for the masses". I do it because I enjoy it. I primarily use DX but dabble in OpenGL because I wanted to learn something different.

And don't give me the arguement about how my potential market would be so much bigger, etc. I don't develop games for a living. I develop vessel management systems (for Windows systems only) and since we have over 600 vessels world-wide (just bought Ensco's US fleet, so that adds 27 more) I have a big enough guaranteed market (especially seeing as how we determine the OSs and software our fleet employees use anyway).

frenchfry, I'm not trying to come off as a jerk, but if developing using APIs that I find interesting makes me stupid, then I thought you should know why I could care less about being stupid.

I'm not commenting on this thread anymore because you are taking it as I am calling 'you' stupid, when I am not, I am saying IMHO that doing so is stupid. But I am not saying that if you do it you are stupid. As long as you can pull out the DX b4 you port you are okay.

frenchfry, sorry if I took it the wrong way. Like I said I'm not really worried about portability. Game programming to me is a hobby and a fun time learing new things. Sorry if I came off the wrong way.

I guess I will comment again on this thread.

you don't have to be sorry, I shouldn't have worded it like that. I should've said it'd be stupid if you ever want Linux people to play. I don't like OpenGL anywayz, but since my brother just got a Linux box, it'd be cool if I could learn it and make him a game for Christmas or something.

i'm not sure now. do i want to program with directx or opengl? i definitely would like the ease of graphics programming and complexity of the graphics with opengl, but i do need sound and input, of course. anyways to get around this with using opengl for graphics and then what other apis are there for sound and input?

For things other than Graphics, You could use SDL, Allegro,
    ClanLIB, DirectX.

why not learn both opengl and direct x, then decide which one you like. its always nice to have a knowledge of opengl/DX, so you can add stuff like directinput and directsound into your programs.
