Yes, very helpful and in some instances neccesary.

but i'm not the greatest artist. is this necessary? to be able to draw and the sort?
Yes, helpful in some cases but never neccesary. The only time it would ever be helpful for a programmer to be a good artist is if you're an amatuer programmer trying to create a game. Well, that may not be the only time, but for the most part being a good artist isn't really all that neccesary when you're a programmer. Basically try to acquire any computer related skills you can regardless of what you specialize in (i.e. programming); most of the skills may not be neccesary but in some shape or form they may become helpful along the line.

Artistic skills are not mandatory but they shouldn't be discounted so easily. YOU will have to create art for your games - it's ok if it's just a STICK figure man but you will cuase yourself really bad grief if you can't create something and have it look like you want it to look.

There are a ton of places on the internet where these artists talk on forums. I was on one the other day, I would give you the link if i remembered it. They're itching to create art for games or whatever, you'll be much happier with your projects if you team up with an artist.

Also, if you have plans to create 3D games someday you will need to know the principles of design and such. So learning a little bit about drawing can take you alot of places.

I disagree. Perhaps artistic talent is not needed in the creation of a game, however a firm knowlege of visual concepts and skills is absolutely mandatory. Otherwise, all you can do is help create a weak, unrealistic engine. Not much of a game. Even if you're working with a team of atists, programmer:artist communication must be based on understanding.
