My ultimate goal for programming games is to make a TBS that resembles a Civilization type of game. I have so many ideas for the game, but I probably won't be able to start on a game of that magnitude for at least another 8-12 months.

    On a side note:

I'd say that making sports games would be the hardest for amatuer programmers. Think of all the animations that would have to be created!

oh and by rpg it doesn't necessarily mean text rpg... it could also be something like final fantasy etc.

Old Skool RPG's. There are kinda boring when you are working on the basic tile engine, but once you get the really basic workings of the tile engine, it gets really fun. Especially the battle engine. . Once I get my collision detection working in my tile engine, I'm starting on the battle engine. That's the funnest part of programming a RPG engine. The engine I am using is going to be sorta like Final Fantasy Tactics on steroids, it is sped up so that random battle will be possible.

Point of Despair sounds depressing... and it sounds sort of unoriginal ( everyone's calling their games point of doom, point of decay, point of darkness, point of death, etc.). I liked Terminus better

Yah i also think that rpg's are the funnest to make, probably because there is so much to do with them... battle engine, level making, plot writing etc.

well it is a dark and sad storyline to it, so just pick up from there. Plus if I used Terminus I would probably get threatened to a lawsuit, since there is already a RPG out there with a copyright on the name Terminus (it was an old sega saturn game, but believe it or not, they still have a copyright on it)

I think it would be hard to make a totaly origional RPG, it would have something in common with another RPG, or else it wouldnt be good

Couldn't agree more with you; I think it's hard to make an original game period. How often do you see an original game come out? Nearly all of them follow the same basic patterns of every other game. Personally I think it's a lot easier on amatuer developers to come up with an original game, because they don't have to worry about how the game will sell. If money weren't such a huge factor, which of course it is, for professional game developers I think we'd see a lot more original games come out. A lot of pubilishers aren't going to be willing to take a chance on an expensive project that could very well turn out to be a huge failure. However, amatuer developers don't nearly have as much of an oppurtunity to create their game to it's fullest. I guess it's a lose lose situation in trying to create an original. Maybe it's really a luck of the draw in whether a game is perceived original or not?

Ah who cares...and why did I have to turn that into such a huge statement?

Isn't action and adventure more or less the same? I mean if you are going on an adventure you expect to find action, otherwise it's just a crappy adventure and no one will play it

I never liked role playing, but then again maybe it's because I'm traumatized from the sock puppets we use during sex...
