    Fade-in/out timing (opionions)

I'm attaching the files needed to test the first two parts of my
game's intro. It uses Direct Draw's Set/Get Gamma Ramp feature
    to do fade-ins/fade-outs.

If you don't mind testing this (it's only about 10 seconds or so)
and posting your opinions on the fade-in/out timing I'd
    really appreciate it.

You'll need DirectX 7 or higher to run it.

**I know the graphics for the second screenshot are kind of
"cheesy" and "cartoony", bear in mind these are pre-alpha
graphics (pretty much just place holders). Also, the music needs
work. I'm just learning how to write midi scores so I know I need
    to polish the music up.**

Basically this demo just fades in to the studio logo then fades out
and fades in to what will be the first shot of the intro story
still screenshots. Finally it fades out of this and ends. The final
version will have accompanying text with each storyline still shot.

    You opinions/thought/rants?

    Thanks, Ihsir.

I forgot to ask. If you guys/gals don't mind, can you list the basic
system you tested it on (ie: processor speed and amount of RAM).

    Thanks again.

Well, when I play it I only get a blank black screen, however, the music does play in the background. Also, there is no way for me to escape the screen unless I close the program through ctrl+alt+del. I have DX8 runtimes installed, so that shouldn't be the problem. The only thing I can think of is that it is my exremely poor video card. I have 4mb Pro Rage Turbo 3D AGP Card (it goes something like that). My processor is a 500 mhz Celeron, and I have 384mb of RAM.

When I first got this computer...almost 2 years ago...it only had 32mb of RAM in it and a 4gb hard drive! Now imagine how much fun I used to have with it lol! I was going to buy a new PC a few weeks ago but instead I got ancy and bought an X-Box instead. Then again I did just buy a new 40gb hard drive a little over a month ago so I didn't feel like dealing with computers so soon. (hey, I have a job, I have no payment responsiblities, so I get to go buy whatever I want to. hehe).

    TechWins,
Your video card shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have
enough video ram then the surfaces should be loaded in system
memory. ??? I'm not sure why the fade didn't work ??? Unless
your video card can't handle the gamma ramp adjustments (?).

How long did the screen stay black? It should go black for few
seconds then slowly fade into the logo.

I also wanted to say thanks to you guys for testing it out for me. I really do appreciate it. I'm still trying to get my tech
coded out and I want to have as many of the bugs worked out of
it before I actually start to code the gameplay itself (that way the
gameplay coding should go fast and smooth, since the design and
    tech will be done already).

    Thanks again!

Holy crap! I haven't tested it with XP.

So far the systems I've tested it on are:

    Win98SE - P3 933mHz - 128 MB RAM - 32 MB ATI video card
    Win2KPro - P4 1.8gHz - 256 MB RAM - 16 MB NVIDIA video card
    Win98SE - P3 550mHz - 128 MB RAM - 2 MB ATI card

It works without a problem on the first 2 systems. I get the same
error as you (TechWins) with the 3rd system. The fade is based
on your video cards gamma settings. The 3rd system which has
a crappy ATI video card only gets about a tenth of the way
through the fade before it switches to fade out.

Since I want the game to run on as many systems as possible the
only solution would be to use a different method of fading. Now I
just need to learn another way to fade a DirectDraw surface......

Anybody here have experience with this?

For me I have to wait like 1 min or 2 for the fade-in, then it takes a while, then takes a while to fade-out, but otherwise it's good.
