Looking to make simple sprite RPG

I'd like to ask some help for some pointers of what to look into to begin my game. I'm a novice C programmer with no knowledge of Win32 API programming. I'd like to concoct a little RPGish game using sprites focused primarily on pvp, 2v2, etc. The maps would not have to be large at all. I'm wanting to use sprites. Anyone have any links of information I could look into for API programming such a simple game.
