Hello! FreeOrion is a non commercial community game project that aims to create a new high quality 4X space strategy game. The project is already well under way, and at the moment version 0.4, which deals primarily with space combat, ship design and tech tree additions for both of the above, is being developed. Future stages include things like diplomacy, AI, ground combat, espionage, governments (SMAC-style) etc.

FreeOrion is being coded primarily with C++. Python is also used for AI scripting. The project uses modern C++ features, makes extensive use of the Boost C++ libraries, and uses the Ogre 3D library to handle rendering in the client. FreeOrion can be built on Windows, Linux or MacOSX. The project tries to keep the quality of the code to a very high level. This is necessary for an enterprise as big, complex and ambitious as FreeOrion.

The development speed of the project is mainly slowed down by the lack of dedicated and skillful programmers; if you are interested in working with talented individuals on an open source game project such as this and don`t mind learning new things, FreeOrion is a project for you.

You can find more info about the project from here:

Main Page - FreeOrionWiki

… and more info on how to contribute to the project can be found here:

How to Help - FreeOrionWiki

If you have any specific questions about some areas of the game or want to contribute to the project, please register to our forum:

FreeOrion • Index page

FreeOrion also has an IRC channel: #freeorion at irc.freenode.net.
This channel isn't always monitored however, so if you don't receive a reply to your post within a few minutes, please redirect your post/posts to the forums of the project.

A good summary of the game’s current situation (note the date of this post) can be found here:

Interview with FreeOrion's Programming Lead: Zach Laine | Space Strategy Games Sector

And finally, here are some screenshots from the game (including a composite picture of preliminary space combat material):

Personally, ever since Master Of Orion 3 turned out to be a disappointment for me, I have hoped for a project like this. The core team behind the FreeOrion project isn`t very big, but consists of highly talented and motivated individuals that all share a common goal.

Popularily referred to as CFugue, meaning Carnatic Fugue or the C/C++ replacement of JFugue, MusicNoteLib is a high level Music Programming Library. This library makes it possible to play music notes directly from C/C++ programs, without ever having to deal with the low-level MIDI complexities. This library provides a beautiful abstraction that lets you concetrate on programming the music rather than worry about the MIDI nuances. Provides features that makes it possible to use this library directly from many platforms, including but not limited to ASP pages, .Net applications and even non-Windows based systems.

For usage samples and further details, please refer to the documentation at MusicNoteLib, The C++ Music Programming Library
Using this library to play music is as easy as writing plain music notes. Just create a Player object and call the Play method on it supplying the Music notes to be played. Simple.

Example Usage:

Code:

MusicNoteLib::Player player; // Create the Player Object
player.Play("C D E F G A B"); // Play the Music Notes on the default MIDI output port

With built-in support for both Carnatic and Western Music alike, this is the first and only one of its kind.

If you wish to take part in building this world class library, join the CFugue project development team at: CFugue MusicNoteLib - the C/C++ Music Programming Library

Hey guys, looking for a C/Lua/JASS coder for the new Starcraft 2 game coming out. Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of Starcraft 2 is offering a new feature for map makers. Basically map makers will be able to sell their very good maps for a self-determined price.

Starcraft 2 will have roughly 6-8 million people buying the game, and a very large percentage of those people will be playing online; that's where the map making team comes in.

Our goal is to create some awesome maps bursting with creativity and fun, and sell em for a fair price.

The numbers I'm estimating now, is about 1/2 - 1 % of the market purchasing one of our maps at around $2.99 a piece. Blizzard will probably take $1.00 of that as a broker fee.

30,000 people buying the map for $1.99 profit is ~$60,000, split up between a 5 person projected team that's $11,000 per person for ONE map. Imagine something like 120,000 people at $2.99 profit a piece. This isn't day-dreaming either folks.

All money will be split 100% evenly between all team members. No one makes a penny more or a penny less on any project.

The map editor programming interface will be based on the C language. Projected outlook for 1 map will probably look like 2-3 months. A lead game designer for Blizzard Dustin Browder has stated that good map makers should be able to quit their day jobs around 4:30 on this Youtube video.

Currently on the team is myself who will be the marketer so people will buy the map, I'm also in charge of Web Design and customer relations at the moment. Also on the team is another guy who has a bachelors in Game Art and Design. He'll be our lead designer.

If anyone is interested in this excellent opportunity, please PM me or e-mail me pimsh0 AT hotmail.com . We also need a modeler. We may need 2 programmers so don't be shy! We need people with relevant experience and a passion for gaming. This could turn out to be very monetarily beneficial so we aren't messing around, serious applicants only!

Thanks,
Tony
