    VS2005 is released

This is both good news and bad news. The good news is Visual Studio 2005 Professional has been released to MSDN subscribers (this means you need an MSDN Universal subscription to download it - check with your boss or university). The rest will come around mid-November.

The bad news is we have to stop using the (free) betas and pay for it! D'oh!

Not if you go with Express. Express is being given away for a year. Not sure if you need to pay for it after that.

Personally I can't download 445MB (or more exactly don't feel like trying). So I found the following: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/076...books&v=glance

A book covering C# that includes Express on CD for the low cost of $20. Of course unless you buy something else worth $5 or more, you get charged shipping (clever Amazon). So just plop something on there worth $5. That's usually how much shipping costs. Free item that way.

    Smart Frobozz.

The problem I have with the express versions is that I plan to turn the software I make at home into commercial software Also the lack of integration between Web Developer and C# (try making an ASP.NET solution) is a bit of a pain. Considering their (now free) price though, it's worth it.

Whats even more exciting is all the Team Suite stuff they're coming out with. I wish I had an MSDN subscription so we could download it!

I've already mentioned it to you, but for the benefit of others:

The first topic mentions you can legally sell software you make with the express editions.

Also, if you register after you download, you get all of this:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/ex...r/default.aspx

I'm going to download and install it tonight. It could cripple my current VS.NET 2005 BETA 2 installation, but I really want those icons.

It's a few days old, but heres the announcement:

Well I decided to take the plunge. About five minutes ago I started the download of the manual installation image. I want the complete thing. No web install stuff.

If it manages to hold at 40K/sec, it will finish in roughly three hours. However I don't think it will so download time will be closer to four hours. Still not bad for 445MB.

Finally finished the download around 10AM. Finished installing it about ten minutes ago. Roughly resembles the second beta so it shouldn't be difficult to pick up.

Now to install the DirectX SDK.

The Visual C++ isnt much use to me as it doesnt use ATL and MFC, but it's still a good compiler to have around, and will probably make a dent on the amount of downloads DevC++ gets this year!

The Web Designer and C# packages are very impressive.

I left the VB one where it is (), and giggled to myself when I saw Visual J++ - is anyone still using that crap?!?!

    MSJava.

It looks to be a new version of J++ - you can chew over the minutia between them all you wish, but it looks like the same old crap it always was.

And with C# as it is, there's even less need for it than before as I see it.
