New to C#, have some questions

    Hi all,

I'm starting a new job and C# is going to be necessary. I'm used to writing C/C++ in Linux/Unix.

    1) Well, VStudio isn't free, so what's generally regarded as the best "free" IDE so I can start poking around with this at home?

    2) I was reading that "all" .NET languages use the same "class library". That sounds really cool. So I'm guessing you never have any kind of "#include" statement for that library, just "using" statements (for the relevant parts of this implicit super-library) in C# or any other .NET language?

    Thank you in advance!

I am not a C# programmer, but I would point out that MS Visual C# Express is available at zero price, unless I missed something.

I get maybe two dozen requests for help with some sort of programming or design problem every day. Most have more sense than to send me hundreds of lines of code. If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

I use C# express all the time. Had a windows forms class last semester and it has pretty much everything you need to create an application using it, it's pretty big for a free software.

A funny thing about interoperability between language. In order to create a good SDI App You can use a Microsoft Visual Basic dll and import their framework they have set up for SDI Apps. Thought that was funny, since there isn't an equivalent built into C# libraries.
