Getting the word count of a file

Is there any way to get the total number of words that is in a text file without looping through each line and breaking it down into words and keeping track of that number with a counter variable? Something like dividing the size of the file with the size of a string?

How long is a word? Find that value, then you can divide the file size.

    Otherwise, you're stuck with counting.

That's like asking if there's a way to win the lottery without buying a ticket for every single combination of numbers.

I'm sure you can come up with an approximate answer. It depends what you intend to do with the result.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.
