    Question Systray and Taskbar control

I have been doing some C++ programming on my own, away from school assignments and I'm trying to find a way to eliminate the icon that normally appears on your taskbar. I would like to minimize the program I'm writing, or better yet, close it, but leave the thread running in the background until I decide to shut it down completely. There should be a way to eliminate the taskbar Icon and "stash" it in the systray (by the clock).

Does anyone out there have any ideas on where to look for help and assistance with this. Any help would be muchly appreciated.
