Direct x 8.0 install on WinXp

Hi all I bought a book on advanced game programming and the cd came with a version of Direct X v.8.0. The problem was when i tried to install it i got an error up saying this:

    Code:
    16bit Windows Subsystem

The system file is not suitable for running MSDOS and Windows Applications. Press Close to terminate install
Does this mean it will not run under Windows XP? I even tryed the program compatability settings and this did nothing to erase the problem. Is there any links you jnow where I can download a version to run under Windows Xp? Any help appreiciated!

    Isn't 8.0 an outdated version?

Anyway, are you sure it doesn't say:

    16-bit Windows Subsystem
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
That's a very common error. It means one of your system files is corrupt. You can consult here for a solution to that:

...and lastly, what in the hell does this have to do with C++?
